THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (1964) 2016

full.thenightoftheiguana-1sh-2016

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for John Huston’s film of Tennessee Williams’ sultry drama THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA (1964) starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and Sue Lyon. Burton plays a defrocked Episcopal priest whose post-clerical vocation is directing a busload of middle-aged women on a tour of Mexico. All are middle aged except for one, the luscious Lyon, straight from her title role as LOLITA in the Stanley Kubrick film. Burton has his demons to keep at bay – alcohol, despair and his lust for Lyon. Somehow this group ends up in a rundown Mexican beachside hotel run by the ravishing if ripe Gardner. Gardner has two hot beach boys to keep her amused, so it’s something deeper than her own considerable passion and loneliness that attracts her to Burton. Add to this mix a kind and elegant English spinster, fabulously portrayed by the great Kerr, and her ancient father, who come to stay at the hotel and you have another great Tennessee Williams drama, one of the loveliest of his plays. Marvelously brought to the screen by John Huston, the film fairly bristles. Perhaps the off-screen love affair of Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who were together in Mexico at the time of shooting has famously made the film part of sixties movie lore. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition, with minor fold separations and extra creases.

ON THE BEACH (1959) 7394

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Stanley Kramer post-nuclear war drama, ON THE BEACH (1959). Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Tony Perkins, and Fred Astaire starred in this film about the survivors of a nuclear war who face extinction because of radioactive fallout. A melancholic love story about a U.S. Naval submarine captain and an Australian woman who are thrown together in a post apocalyptic world, the film was one of the last important films of the decade of the 1950s. Based on a novel by Nevil Shute, the movie was one of the first popular examinations of the meaning of nuclear conflict. Watching the film today one is surprised by its still potent message, “There is still, time, brother.” But is there? The poster is a folded one sheet in fine plus condition with some minor distresses. Presents well. This poster is printed with blank and hot pink dayglo on white paper.

This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Herbert Glazer comedy short, MIGHTY LAK A GOAT (1942) starring Robert Blake, John Dilson, Ava Gardner, and Spanky McFarland. Yes, that’s right – Ava Gardner. Gardner makes a cameo appearance in this short as the cashier who sells The Gang tickets to a movie! This is one of the later shorts in the famous “Our Gang/Little Rascals” series. Created by Hal Roach in 1922, the series showcases kids just being themselves. The series was officially called both “Our Gang” and “Hal Roach’s Rascals” until 1932, when “Our Gang” became the sole title of the series. In 1938 Roach sold the series to MGM, who continued to produce comedy shorts in the series for another five years. In the mid-50s, the original Roach shorts were syndicated for television under the title “The Little Rascals.” MIGHTY LAK A GOAT is one of the best of all of the “Our Gang” shorts, and Spanky only appeared in one more film in the series. This original stone lithograph one sheet poster is signed by Spanky McFarland and is in fine condition.

MOGAMBO (1953) 9561

full.mogambo 1s 9561

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the John Ford romantic adventure, MOGAMBO (1953) starring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, and Donald Sinden. This film was a remake of RED DUST (1932), a film made by Gable over twenty years earlier. In the Ford remake, Gable plays a world weary and cynical big game hunter and safari leader. First he meets Gardner, a wisecracking American chorus girl who finds herself stranded in the jungle. Then, a British anthropologist (Sinden) and his sheltered wife (Kelly) arrive on the scene. Gable agrees to lead them all on an expedition into gorilla country. Gardner was nominated for Best Actress and Kelly was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The great African scenery and wild animals are beautifully photographed in Technicolor, and Ford brilliantly decided not to use a musical score but rather jungle sounds and tribal chants as his soundtrack. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition with only some touch-up at fold lines and repairs to minor tears.

THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960) 19809

theangelworered window card

Original MGM Window Card (14×22) for the Nunnally Johnson war drama, THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960)– starring Ava Gardner, Dirk Bogarde, and Joseph Cotten. Adapted by Johnson from the Bruce Mashall novel ‚”The Fair Bride.” this was the last film directed by the prolific screenwriter Johnson. It tells the story of a priest (Bogarde) who travels to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to join the Loyalists and falls in love with the beautiful Soledad (Gardner). Bogarde gives a dynamic performance as the tortured young priest who has lost his faith in the church but not his faith in God. Gardner, one of the most beautiful women in the movies, is also very good as the cynical yet somehow innocent entertainer and prostitute. The chemistry between the two is intense and believable. Both the Loyalists and the Franco rebels are presented as equally flawed and totalitarian. This original window card is in very fine condition.
