This is an original South African 1970s Re-release One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the John Ford romantic classic, THE QUIET MAN (1952)—starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, and Barry Fitzgerald. John Ford bought the rights to the story over a decade before and tried to get every studio in Hollywood to make it. Finally, Republic agreed to do it on the condition that Ford first make a John Wayne cavalry picture, RIO GRANDE (1950). This second film tells the story of a disgraced American boxer (Wayne) who retires to Ireland where he meets Mary Kate (O’Hara) and falls in love. Wayne delivers one of his best performances as a regular guy with real feelings and emotions. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It won the Oscar for Best Cinematography and Best Director to Ford. This original South African re-release one sheet poster is folded and in fine condition, with some tears along the upper border and some minor fold separations.
