KRAKATOA EAST OF JAVA (1969) 20487

Original Cinerama Releasing Corp Window Card (14×22) for the Bernard L. Kowalski adventure drama, KRAKATOA: EAST OF JAVA (1969)—starring Maximillian Schell, Diane Baker, Brian Keith, and Barbara Werle. The producers learned of the geographic error—Krakatoa was really WEST of Java in the Sundra Strait—only after all the advertising and publicity materials had already been prepared. It was decided that it would be too costly to correct this error. While the effects surrounding the eruption are good and garnered the film its only Oscar nomination for Best Special Visual Effects— the acting, dialogue, and directing are lackluster at best. Kowalski was basically a TV director, and he never really uses the “big” screen, let alone Cinerama, to its full potential. The window card has the Cinerama fan-fold logo and a hand written announcement in the play-date area. Otherwise, the window card is in very good condition.

The screenplay by two-time Academy Awards nominated screenwriter John Michael Hayes is adapted from a novel by Harold Robbins. This a prequel to The Carpetbaggers (1964) which featured Alan Ladd as the older Nevada Smith. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition—with only some scribbling on the reverse side, some pinholes, and minor fold separations at the crossfolds.

THE RARE BREED (1966) 19874

full-therarebreed-WC

Original Universal Pictures Window Card (14×22) for the Andrew V. McLaglen western, THE RARE BREED (1966) starring James Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, Brian Keith, and Juliet Mills. Headstrong widow Martha Price (O’Hara) and her daughter (Mills) together with their prize bull travel from England to Texas to sell their bull and thus introduce Hereford cattle to the American west. Along the way, they meet a cynical and hard-bitten drifter Sam Burnett (Stewart) who helps them on their adventure. Though fictionalized, the film is a fairly accurate account of the displacement of Longhorn cattle in Texas by intentional interbreeding with more conventional bulls. This is certainly one of the original “chick flick” westerns as the story is told from the point of view of the female heroine (Mills). This original window card is in very fine condition.
