THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940) 16413 1955R

full.thephiladelphiastory-22x28-16413

Original MGM 1955 Re-Release Half Sheet Poster (22×28) for the George Cukor classic romantic comedy, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940)—starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, and Ruth Hussey. Katherine Hepburn had been famously labeled “box office poison” by the exhibitors after several of her films in the late thirties had turned out huge flops. But the right property, the right cast and the right director combined to make THE PHILADELPHIA STORY her “comeback” vehicle. Not that she had ever really gone away. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY had been a popular play on Broadway, and Hepburn was prescient enough to buy the film rights for herself. It actually plays more like a film from the previous decade than the forties — witty, elegant, democratic, disdainful of pomposity. This re-release half sheet from 1955 needs some small amount of work, but is available for a fraction of the price of any 1940 poster. And the graphic is great with good images of the three main players. The poster is folded. Good plus condition. Has some marker on the reverse side which has bled lightly to the front. This can be fixed. We recommend paper-backing for this poster. MovieArt can help you with suggestions for restoration.

full.tocatchathief-sc-2

Grant plays a retired jewel thief and Kelly plays the slightly naughty daughter of a nouveau riche oil millionaire. Grace Kelly, John Williams and a police detective are showed in period dress at the costume ball. This film was somewhat lighter fare for Hitchcock without his trademark suspense, but with snappy dialogue replete with sexual innuendo. Nominated for three Academy Awards, Robert Burks won the Oscar for Best Color Cinematography. He shot almost the entire film on location on the French Riviera. This original lobby card is in very fine condition.

charade-insert

They story revolves around a woman (Hepburn), who is pursued by several men who want a fortune her murdered husband had stolen. Blessed with an airy but literate script, elegant and classy performances by Grant and Hepburn, and direction with a continental style and flare by Donen—the end result is one of the best light mysteries ever made. Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer won the Academy Award for Best Original Song (“Charade”). CHARADE was certainly the last great film for Cary Grant, whose chemistry with Hepburn is unbeatable. It did not hurt that this film had a appropriately charming score by Henry Mancini. The insert poster was never folded, and is the best example of the poster in this format that we have seen.

PhiladelphiaStory

PEOPLE WILL TALK (1951) 16410

full.peoplewilltalk insert-16410

Joseph L. Mankiewicz directed this brilliant little film the year after he won two Oscars for the immortal ALL ABOUT EVE. Cary Grant plays Dr. Noah Praetorius, a doctor who believes that a healthy and balanced mind can cure a person’s ills as well or better than handfuls of pills. He believes in treating his patients as well as their diseases. This gets him into some considerable trouble with his colleagues at the clinic. Add a bit of love interest in the person of the lovely Jeanne Crain and you have this sparkling witty comedy. The movie was based on a German play by Curt Goetz, “Dr. Praetorius.” And a sophisticated film it is, too, with one of Grant’s best and really least appreciated performances. Thanks be to God for Joe Mankiewicz! This insert poster is in very fine condition.

IM NO ANGEL (1933) 19852

full-imnoangel-WC-19852-3

Original Paramount Pictures Window Card (14×22) for the Wesley Ruggles musical comedy, I’M NO ANGEL (1933) starring Mae West, Cary Grant, and Gregory Ratoff. This was Mae West’s second starring feature, and she is credited with writing the story, the screenplay, and all the dialogue. There were some problems with the censors, and some of the suggestive lines in some of the songs had to be changed. Amazingly, on this window card the tagline “Why don’t you come up and see me?” a quote made famous from her previous film SHE DONE HIM WRONG appears on this window card for I’M NO ANGEL. Following the success of SHE DONE HIM WRONG (1933), this film brought West and Grant together for a second and final time. This original window card is in very fine condition, paperbacked, ready for framing.
