Stanley Kubrick replaced original director Anthony Mann, but it was really Kirk Douglas as Executive Producer who made many of the decisions. The film is a marvelous retelling of the revolt in 73 B.C. at a gladiatorial school, which mushrooms into a crisis for the Roman Republic. Opposing political factions by Olivier and Laughton try to use the revolt to further their political ends. Besides outstanding performances from the entire cast and expert direction by Kubrick, the film has beautiful cinematography by Russell Metty and a brilliant score by Alex North. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won five Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor to Ustinov and Best Cinematography to Metty. We have graded this poster as Very Good Plus. There is some paper abrasion near the top center. Colors are vivid. Some edge wear. This poster would be improved with Linen Backing. Roadshow posters are much more difficult to acquire than 35mm release material for this film – and better looking as well.

Original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet poster for the Julien Duvivier romantic comedy, TALES OF MANHATTAN (1942) starring Charles Boyer, Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, and Edward G. Robinson. This extremely well crafted and engaging film was made during the period in Hollywood when “anthology” films were all he rage by using large casts to tell several interconnected stories. The connection in all the stories is a tuxedo tailcoat that passes through the hands of several diverse people in New York City. This original one sheet is from the famous Royal Theater Collection, which was discovered in Canada in 1987. This collection of posters and lobby cards was very well known for comprising a large collection of material in excellent condition.

Original RKO 1960 Re-Release One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Charles Lamont musical comedy, ABBOT AND COSTELLO MEET CAPTAIN KIDD (1952) starring Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and Charles Laughton. As Universal Pictures would not spend the money to make the film in color, the comedy team made the film using Abbott’s company, Woodley Productions. Warner Brothers distributed the original film, and RKO distributed the 1960 re-release. The film reminds the audience of the duo’s early days at Universal grinding out comedy gems. Laughton just dove right into the slapstick and supposedly loved it. This original re-release one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition, with some bleed through from the National Screen Service stamp on the reverse side.

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Otto Preminger dramatic masterpiece, ADVISE & CONSENT (1962) starring Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Don Murray, and Walter Pidgeon. This one sheet is a rare style with alternate art by the great American illustrator Saul Bass. ADVISE AND CONSENT is one of the more entertaining political film of the sixties and is about a Senate investigation into a President’s newly nominated Secretary of State. During the hearings, the nominee reveals a secret from the past, which may not only ruin the candidate but also bring into question the President’s judgment. Sound familiar? The characters are beautifully drawn, the performances are all equally brilliant, and Sam Leavitt’s luminous black and white cinematography creates just the right mood. ADVISE AND CONSENT was one of the very successful films by director Otto Preminger. Preminger’s notion of edgy adult drama enjoyed a huge commercial success in the decades of the 1950s and 1960s. This one sheet poster created by famed artist Saul Bass is linen-backed and in very fine condition. With art similar to the three sheet, this style one sheet poster is RARE. Some slight border repair.

Original Paramount Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Erle C. Kenton sci-fi horror classic, ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (1932)—starring Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams, and Bela Lugosi. Based on a novel by H. G. Wells, a mad scientist named Dr. Moreau (Laughton) conducts evil experiments in evolution, eventually establishing himself as a self-styled demigod to a race of mutated, half-human monsters. This was Laughton’s first starring role in an American film, and his performance of the classic mad scientist is menacing, especially when he starts literally “cracking the whip.” This original scene lobby card has been restored to correct pinholes in the borders, two tears at the bottom of the image, and a large vertical tear in the top right border area. Extremely scarce.

Original Selznick Releasing Organization Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Alfred Hitchcock crime thriller, THE PARADINE CASE (1947) starring Gregory Peck, Ann Todd, Charles Laughton, Ethel Barrymore, and Alida Valli. Adapted from a novel by Robert Hichens, this is the story of a happily married London barrister (Peck) who falls in love with the accused poisoner (Valli) he is defending. This was Peck’s second and last film for Hitchcock. Laughton gives one of his best performances as the sadistic and malevolent judge. Barrymore received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of the judge’s intimidated and submissive wife. This original scene lobby card is in very fine condition. It does have the National Screen Service embossment in the lower right corner.
