Casanova was an 18th Century Venetian writer, wit, and aesthete living in an era of grand opulence but also of grand waste, and Sutherland portrays Casanova as both a sexually ravenous as well as a deeply cynical man. A frightening but hauntingly beautiful film, many critics consider it to be Fellini’s last great film and Sutherland’s career best performance.
