RICHARD III (1955) 8732

full.richardIII 1s 8732

This is an original British One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Laurence Olivier Shakespearean masterpiece, RICHARD III (1955). In addition to Olivier directing and playing the title role, he is joined by four other knighted British thespians—Cedric Hardwicke, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, and Stanley Baker. The beautiful and talented Claire Bloom plays The Lady Anne. This is probably the finest example of a Machiavellian monarch on film. King Richard was capable of using deception, manipulation, and outright murder to achieve his goals. Laurence Olivier was the greatest Shakespearean actor of his time, and this role was certainly one of his best. This original British stone lithograph one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine condition with some touch-up to the fold lines and restoration to the border area.

CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989) 816

full.crimesandmisdemeanors-1sh-816

Original Orion Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Woody Allen comedy/drama, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS (1989)—starring Woody Allen, Bill Bernstein, Martin Landau, Claire Bloom, and Alan Alda. This film is really two separate stories about adultery. The first one involves a New York doctor (Landau) who resorts to desperate measures to cover-up his long-term adulterous affair. The other story is about an unhappily married documentary filmmaker (Allen) who fights an adulterous temptation while making his latest documentary about a successful TV producer (Alda), who is also his hated brother-in-law and represents everything that Allen despises. This film is an astounding mixture of the deadly serious and the incredibly funny that Allen does so well. It garnered an Academy Award nomination for Landau for Best Supporting Actor. Woody Allen received two nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay. This original one sheet poster is rolled and in very fine condition.

CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981) 8775

full.clashofthetitans-1sh-8775

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Desmond Davis adventure fantasy, CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981) starring Harry Hamlin, Judi Bowker, Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom, and Maggie Smith. This is a film adaptation of the Greek myth of Perseus (Hamlin) and his quest to battle both Medusa and the Kraken sea monster in order to save the Princess Andromeda (Bowker). While it is true that the scenes with the Greek gods and goddesses are stiff and boring—the film tells a pretty good story with breathtaking scenery and excellent special effects for the time. This was Ray Harryhausen’s last creation of special visual effects, which were all done with stop action animation using only two assistant animators. With wonderful artwork by the Hildebrandt Brothers, this original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition.

THE HAUNTING (1963) 20507

full.thehaunting-pressbook

Original MGM Pressbook (12×17) for the Robert Wise horror classic, THE HAUNTING (1963) starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson. This film is one of the more fondly remembered horror films of the 1960s and certainly one of the best to emerge from MGM, a studio not generally associated with the genre. One of the great virtues of the film is the deft direction by Robert Wise. But the film has a great cast headed up by Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, two wonderful actresses. Among ghost stories, THE HAUNTING is still one of the best. The film was based on a novel by Shirley Jackson. This original 12-page pressbook is in very fine condition; there are no excisions from the book.

THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV (1958) 6159

full-thebrotherskaramazov-1sh-6159

This is an original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Richard Brooks drama, THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV (1958) starring Yul Brynner, Maria Schell, Claire Bloom, and Lee J. Cobb. It was a major task to adapt such a complicated and lengthy novel by Dostoyevsky to film. Though most of the high notes of the book plot are covered, parts of the plot had to be pared down to make a workable film. The performances are all quite good, especially Cobb who plays the father and steals every scene he is in. Indeed, he received the lone Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. There is excellent direction by Brooks who sustains the emotional intensity of the novel but keeps everything on an intimate (as opposed to epic) scale. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine condition, with minor fold separations and some masking tape on left border and back of poster. We have used repair tissue on the separation to keep the poster from further distress. A great Brynner image.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT (1956) 5648

alexanderthegreat quad f 5648 -2

Original United Artists British Quad Poster (30×40) for the Robert Rossen historical epic, ALEXANDER THE GREAT (1956) starring Richard Burton, Fredric March, and Claire Bloom. The film follows the life of the Macedonian king as he unites all the Greek states and leads them against the vast Persian Empire. Although many critics complained that Burton was too old to play Alexander, especially in his adolescent years—Burton gave a strong performance of the charismatic king. Originally folded, this British quad poster is in fine plus condition with only some water staining in the bottom border.
