Original Polish Poster (27×41) for the Joseph Losey WWI courtroom drama, KING & COUNTRY (1964) starring Tom Courtenay, Leo McKern, Dirk Bogarde and Barry Foster. Courtney, always perfect in this type of role, plays a shell-shocked Army Private who deserts after a gruesome assault on his unit eventually facing trail for desertion. He becomes a symbolic scapegoat for a normal reaction to the horrors of war. Poster design features an image of a military cap literally “hung out to dry.” With artwork by Stanislaw Zamecznik, this original Polish poster is in very good condition, with a 2″ chip missing from the upper right border.

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Lewis Gilbert rip-snorting naval adventure, DAMN THE DEFIANT! (1962) starring Alec Guinness, Dirk Bogarde, Maurice Denham, Nigel Stock, and Anthony Quayle. This British production, originally titled H.M.S. DEFIANT, is based on the 1797 Spithead Mutiny in which seamen protested living conditions aboard British naval vessels and also demanded a pay raise. This complicated story rooted in history is totally engrossing, with bold characters and lots of exciting naval action. Guinness made this film during a two month break in the shooting of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962). This original one sheet poster is in fine plus condition, theater used, but with no fold separations, colors vivid.

I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963) 2370

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Ronald Neame musical drama, I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963)—starring Judy Garland, Dirk Bogarde, and Jack Klugman. This was Garland’s last film, made just prior to starting her controversial TV series. Her character, Jenny Bowman, is a thinly disguised self-portrait with outstanding singing and full-bodied emotional acting. The film was panned at its premier for being old school melodrama, after a troubled production schedule. Perhaps many people preferred to remember the great star as their beloved Dorothy and not see her as a troubled adult with a scandalous past. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition, with only a tear in the upper right hand corner and some pinholes. Now the poster is regarded as quite good.

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Anthony Asquith classic murder mystery, FIVE ANGLES ON MURDER (1953)—starring Jean Kent, Dirk Bogarde, John McCallum, and Susan Shaw. Originally released by General Film Distributors in the UK with the title THE WOMAN IN QUESTION (1950), this excellent British mystery delves into the murder of fairground fortune teller named Astra. The wonderful twist of the film is that five different people relate their understanding of Astra’s character and the events leading up to the murder. The film is also memorable for the background of the little seaside town, the shabby fairground, and the little houses unchanged for fifty years. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition.

THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960) 19809

Original MGM Window Card (14×22) for the Nunnally Johnson war drama, THE ANGEL WORE RED (1960)– starring Ava Gardner, Dirk Bogarde, and Joseph Cotten. Adapted by Johnson from the Bruce Mashall novel ‚”The Fair Bride.” this was the last film directed by the prolific screenwriter Johnson. It tells the story of a priest (Bogarde) who travels to Spain during the Spanish Civil War to join the Loyalists and falls in love with the beautiful Soledad (Gardner). Bogarde gives a dynamic performance as the tortured young priest who has lost his faith in the church but not his faith in God. Gardner, one of the most beautiful women in the movies, is also very good as the cynical yet somehow innocent entertainer and prostitute. The chemistry between the two is intense and believable. Both the Loyalists and the Franco rebels are presented as equally flawed and totalitarian. This original window card is in very fine condition.
