CLEOPATRA (1963) 6287

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Belgian original poster (35mm) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz historical epic, CLEOPATRA (1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison. Originally this film was supposed to be two three hour movies—the first dealing with Caesar and Cleopatra and the second with Antony and Cleopatra. But Fox, reeling from the exorbitant cost overruns associated with this budgetary debacle, decided to release one four hour movie instead. Elizabeth Taylor’s original contract stipulated that she was to be paid $1 million. But after a lengthy $50 million lawsuit brought by the studio against Burton and Taylor and then a countersuit by Taylor, the studio finally settled with the actress for $7 million. A painting by Howard Terpning was used worldwide for the CLEOPATRA advertising campaign. The poster is in fine plus condition. Linen backing would make this poster shine! SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) 13620

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures Title Lobby Card (11×14) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz dramatic classic, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift. Based on a play by the very successful Broadway icon Tennessee Williams, the screenplay was skillfully adapted by Gore Vidal. Set in New Orleans in 1937, Hepburn plays a lady of means who is mourning the loss of her son. She wants to donate a million dollars to the hospital where Clift is a doctor if he will perform a lobotomy on her niece Taylor. The young woman seems to be totally traumatized by what she witnessed last summer. Tennessee Williams never forgave his own mother for letting his sister Rose have a lobotomy to “cure” her anxiety problems. The whole story turns on the character of the son Sebastian, but you never see his face or hear his voice in Taylor’s flashbacks. He is supposed to have died of a heart attack, but the audience finally discovers that it was a horribly cruel case of gay bashing. Both Taylor and Hepburn were nominated for Oscars. It was the eighth nomination for Hepburn and the third nomination for Taylor. This title card has two paper abrasions and is therefore graded as good and priced appropriately.

RAINTREE COUNTY (1956) 21310 THREE PHOTOGRAPHS

Original studio issued oversized photographs from Edward Dmytryk romantic drama, RAINTREE COUNTY (1957) starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Marie Saint, Nigel Patrick, and Lee Marvin. When this film was in rehearsals, Clift’s notorious drinking problem got completely out of hand. When the film was half finished, Clift left a party given by Taylor and her husband Michael Wilding and crashed his car into a telephone pole, horribly disfiguring his face. Production on the film was shut down for weeks, but the film was finally completed and received four Academy Award nominations, including Taylor’s first nomination for Best Actress. There are three stills in the package. Two of the stills are of publicity paintings done for the film. The third still if of what we believe to be the 24 sheet poster. But the catch here is the portrait of Montgomery Clift. This still is in very fine shape. The 24 sheet still is a bit ragged and the still of Clift and Eva Marie Sainte was trimmed on one side, probably to accomodate the display. These are theater used stills which we acquired from a 70mm cinema that played the film originally.
