The film came from the “Hit Parade” radio program sponsored by Lucky Strikes cigarettes and revolves around Susan Hayward who ghost writes songs for composer John Carroll, whose charms evidently outweighed his song-sriting ability. The film received two Oscar nominations: Walter Scharf was nominated for Best Original Score and “Change of Heart” was nominated for Best Original Song. Everything about this film was excellent—a stunning cast, excellent direction from Curtiz, beautiful cinematography by Ernest Haller, and a wonderful score by Max Steiner. Joan Crawford deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and both Eve Arden and Ann Blyth were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay. As a rather bleak look at the exploitation a woman working in a man’s world can expect, this film was refreshingly frank for the time.
