This amazing film is a sumptuous tale of an early 20th century Swedish family, the Ekdahls—Oscar and Emilie (the parents) and Fanny and Alexander (the children). When the father dies, the mother first seeks counsel from the local bishop and eventually marries him. The children are then forced to move to the bishop’s austere and forbidding chancery. A period piece of stunning detail, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards—including Best Director and Best Screenplay for Bergman. The film won four Oscars: Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film.
