Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Tony Perkins, and Fred Astaire starred in this film about the survivors of a nuclear war who face extinction because of radioactive fallout. A melancholic love story about a U.S. Naval submarine captain and an Australian woman who are thrown together in a post apocalyptic world, the film was one of the last important films of the decade of the 1950s. Based on a novel by Nevil Shute, the movie was one of the first popular examinations of the meaning of nuclear conflict. Watching the film today one is surprised by its still potent message, “There is still, time, brother.” But is there? The poster is a folded one sheet in fine plus condition with some minor distresses. Presents well. This poster is printed with blank and hot pink dayglo on white paper.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT (1974) 20453

full.thatsentertainment-40x60-20453

Original MGM 40×60 Poster for the Jack Haley Jr. musical documentary, THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT. Released in 1974, amidst the Watergate scandal and growing public cynicism, THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! was among the most popular films of the year. This retrospective of MGM musicals features an A-list cast of hosts and narrators, including Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Liza Minnelli and other MGM stars reminiscing on the backlot of the studio, the last time a film was shot on the MGM backlot. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! is really nothing more than excerpts from musicals such as SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, THE GREAT ZIEGFELD, BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938, STRIKE UP THE BAND, ANCHORS AWEIGH, GIGI, etc., but the format was so popular that it spawned THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! PART II (1976) and THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! PART III (1994), and inspired THAT’S DANCING! (1985). The tagline for the publicity campaign: “Boy! Do We Need It Now” was prescient. And not inappropriate for our own angst-ridden era. This original 40×60 poster is rolled and in very fine condition, with just some minor tears on the borders. THIS IS A 40X60 INCH POSTER, rolled, and thus it is large!

THE BELLE OF NEW YORK (1952) 9572

full.belleofny 1s 9572

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Charles Walters musical comedy, THE BELLE OF NEW YORK starring Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen. The film was a remake of a 1919 silent film of the same name starring Marion Davies. Both films were based on the first American stage musical to play London’s West End, where it was a big hit in 1897. Originally, the film was to be made with Astaire and Judy Garland, but the two stars could never get their overlapping schedules to allow them to work together. So, the female lead was given to Vera-Ellen. She is a seductive, charming, and talented dancer, and her fun solo “Naughty But Nice” is a delight to watch. Her physical style of dancing is a nice complement to Astaire’s smooth elegance. Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer wrote the musical numbers, and Astaire’s “I Wanna Be a Dancin’ Man” is certainly one of his most memorable performances. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. The linen lip has been trimmed up to the poster. There are some minor distresses to the top border, and the fold lines are left untouched. There is no missing paper, and the colors are bright.
