THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT (1945) 2553

full.thehornblowsatmidnight-TC-2553

Original Warner Brothers Title Lobby Card (11×14) for the Raoul Walsh music fantasy, THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT (1945)—starring Jack Benny, Dolores Moran, and Alexis Smith. Besides some truly surreal fantasy scenes like the one of Benny in a giant coffee cup, the film has a happy and bouncy feel with a funny dialogue very much like radio comedy of the time. Because the film was initially not a big hit at the box office, Benny made mention of the film as a flop in his comedy routines, even blaming it for the end of his film career. In reality, Benny’s film appearances were few and far between because of his wildly popular radio and later TV series. This original title lobby card is in fine plus condition, with some minor water damage at the bottom, minor surface wear, and one small tear in the right border.

Original 20th Century-Fox Title Lobby Card for the Archie Mayo romantic comedy classic, CHARLEY’S AUNT (1941) starring Jack Benny, Kay Francis, Anne Baxter, James Ellison, and Richard Haydn. Set in Oxford in 1890, Charley Wyckham (Haydn) and Jack Chesney (Ellison) blackmail fellow student Fancourt Babberley (Benny) to pose as Charley’s Brazilian Aunt Donna Lucia, so “she” can be the chaperone on their amorous adventures with the niece and ward of crusty Stephen Spettigue. Complications arise when Babberley becomes the love object of both old Spettigue and Sir Francis Chesney. And then Charley’s real aunt shows up. Many critics consider this wonderful cross-dressing English farce to be among Benny’s greatest and funniest roles. This original title card is in fine condition. One small tear in the left border area has been repaired with archival tissue. Some surface wear.
