LA DOLCE VITA (1959) 18992

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Astor Pictures One Sheet Poster (81×81) for the Federico Fellini masterpiece, LA DOLCE VITA (1960) starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, and Anouk Aimee. The iconic image of Anita Ekberg holding a kitten – from the scene where she wades through the Trevi fountain – became the central image of the campaign for this film in the U.S. This film depicts seven days (and nights) in the life of an Italian journalist (Mastroianni), who is torn between making something serious of his life or drifting along on a pleasant stream of casual affairs and meaningless work. Fellini gives us a wonderful chronicle of a decadent society where there are no real values other than alcohol and sex, and no solutions except suicide. Fellini’s widescreen look at Roman life at the beginning of the sixties mirrors Hollywood’s fascination with historical Roman epics of the period. LA DOLCE VITA is, quite simply, one of the most famous films in the history of the cinema. It created a sensation when it was released. A landmark score by Nino Rota leaves an indelible imprint in the minds of all who see this film for the first time. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for Fellini, Best Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. It won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. We grade this as Fine Plus. There is a small chip missing out of the border area on the upper right corner, easily restored with linen backing. Image area is very fine. We will sell this either backed or unbacked for the price stated. Ask us about linen backing services through one of our
skilled conservationists.

Set during the early 16th Century, this Italian costume spectacle (original title: Le notti di Lucrezia Borgia) chronicles the evil exploits of Lucretia Borgia and her brother Cesare. As the object of her affection, Sernas displays his outstanding athletic prowess in an interminable succession of sword fights and dives from prison towers. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition—with some minor rumpling, extra folds (but no fold separations), and minor foxing.

HELEN OF TROY (1956) 6717

full.helenoftroy-insert-r59-6717

Original Warner Brothers 1959 Re-Release Duotone Insert Poster (14×36) for the Robert Wise ancient Greek epic, HELEN OF TROY (1956)–starring Rossana Podesta, Jacques Sernas, Niall MacGinnis, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Warner’s version of the tale of Homer’s Iliad spins the story so that the Trojans are the heroic peace loving people trapped in a war with the bellicose Greeks. Podesta was new to American films, and Warners had high hopes for her, but her English was so broken that they elected to have her voice – and the voice of Sernas – dubbed. The re-release insert is curious because the poster makes no mention at all of leading man Sernas. Condition is very fine. MovieArt also has posters for the original 1956 release of this film including two rare 30x40s! If you watch this film, look for a small role by a very young Brigitte Bardot!
