OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the Otto Preminger crime drama, ANATOMY OF A MURDER (1959) starring James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O’Connell, and George C. Scott. One of the best films of courtroom drama, the film was still highly controversial, based partially on the open use of words like “bitch,” “contraceptive,” “penetration,” “rape,” “slut,” and “sperm.” Upon its original release, the film was banned in Chicago. And James Stewart’s father was so offended by the film that he took out an ad in his local newspaper urging people not to see it. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Stewart, and Best Supporting Actor for both O’Connell and Scott. This original Belgian poster is in fine plus to very fine condition.

This film tells the dramatic stories of trapeze artists, a clown, and an elephant trainer against a background of circus spectacle. DeMille toured the Midwest for two months with the Ringling Bros. circus—collecting anecdotes, slang, and behind-the-scenes ideas. Furthermore, the director, always demanding of his performers, insisted that everyone truly learn to perform the circus stunts they were supposed to be performing in the film. The popular movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, including Best Picture. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good plus condition. Some tape residue on the front and a chip is missing from the border area. Would linen back very successfully. Ask us about poster restoration.

POT O’GOLD (1941) 6515

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original United Artists Lobby Card Set for the George Marshall musical comedy, POT O’ GOLD (1941) starring James Stewart, Paulette Goddard, Horace Heidt, and Charles Winninger. This is the movie version of a popular radio program of the same name that featured musical routines. It is a romantic comedy told in musical form with Stewart playing one of his trademark common man personas — who could also sing. And though audiences did not usually associate Stewart with singing, he is actually pretty good. This delightful film is meant to be funny, a little madcap, and always sweet. The overall condition is fine plus. The title card is in Fine Plus condition. The other cards range from Fine to Very Fine. The cards a little smudged in places, although some are quite clean. Fine to Very Fine condition.

Original Belgian Poster (Trimmed to 13×21) for the Alfred Hitchcock mystery thriller, ROPE (1948) starring James Stewart, Joan Chandler, John Dall, and Farley Granger. Brandon (Dall) and Phillip (Granger) strangle their “inferior” classmate, hide his body in their apartment, and invite his friends and family to a dinner party. As the evening wears on, Brandon becomes ever more bolder, while Phillip begins to regret what they have done. The plot is simple, the characters complex, and Hitchcock’s treatment of the Leopold and Loeb parallel quite deft. This original Belgian poster is in fine plus condition, with lower left corner torn off.

DEAR BRIGITTE (1965) 2286

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet Poster for the Henry Koster comedy, DEAR BRIGITTE (1965) starring James Stewart, Fabian, Glynis Johns, Cindy Carol, Bill Mumy, and Brigitte Bardot. The main theme of this film has Professor Leaf (Stewart) granting the wish of his 8-year-old, math whiz son Erasmus (Mumy) to meet French film starlet Brigitte Bardot. This was Stewart’s third and final comedy made at Fox during the 1960s under the direction of Henry Koster. The movie was going to be called ERASMUS WITH FRECKLES, after the book on which it was based. But Brigitte Bardot only agreed to appear in the film on the condition that her name did not appear on the credits or any promotional materials. The only way for the producers to capitalize on the popularity of Bardot was by changing the title to alert the audience that she was in the film. With Jack Davis artwork, this original one sheet poster is folded and in fine condition—with a small interior tear and some pinholes. This poster would line-back nicely.

TAKE HER, SHE’S MINE (1963) 1137

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster (26×38) for the Henry Koster family comedy, TAKE HER, SHE’S MINE (1963) starring James Stewart, Sandra Dee, Audrey Meadows, Philippe Forquet, Robert Morley, Bob Denver, John McGiver and Irene Tsu. In this typical early 1960s comedy, Stewart plays a worried father concerned that his college co-ed daughter (Sandra Dee) is becoming a libertine. He follows her to Europe keeping an eye on her every move. In the end, she’s revealed to be nice girl and the father gets into a variety of sketchy predicaments. The poster art features an image of a typical American businessman screaming — sort of a pop-art, MAD MEN version of Edvard Munch’s THE SCREAM. Art is by Wesja Jestmoja.

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) 5564

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster – an odd size, 11×32, for the John Ford western film THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin. This is perhaps the last great John Ford western. The essential subject of the film is the truth of the American West as opposed to the Legend of it. Sadistic hoodlum Liberty Valence, played wonderfully by Lee Marvin, menaces a territorial town in the days before statehood. James Stewart is a young lawyer who comes to the west to settle down and bring his lawyerly ways with him. John Wayne is a rough-hewn rancher steeped in the values of the old west. Which one of these men end the career of Liberty Valence with a bullet? This is the question on which the film pivots. Vera Miles is the woman who loves them both. This is one of the really unusual and beautiful John Wayne posters. Very Fine. Art by Leszek Holdanowicz.

The entire movie was shot on one set, the largest indoor set ever built at Paramount studios up to that time. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. This re-release half sheet enjoys an image of Hitch himself on the poster and is in very fine condition. A fine alternative to the original year of issue posters. Re-release posters have been the recipient of increased respect among collectors in recent years.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952) 20863

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original one sheet poster for the Cecil B. DeMille epic of Circus Life, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952) starring Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde, James Stewart, Gloria Grahame, Dorothy Lamour and Henry Wilcoxon. One of DeMille’s most popular films, the movie was honored with the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1953. Colorful and lively, with great heaping dollops of melodrama and in-the-arena excitement, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH was filmed up close and personal at Ringling Brothers summer headquaters in Florida. Other pictures have tried to capture the glamor of the circus, but somehow are not remembered with the affection that this magnificent, rowdy and sentimental movie inspires. DeMille was nominated by the Academy of Motion PIcture Arts and Sciences for Best Director, and was awarded the Golden Globe. For a wonderful read about the production of this movie and the many other films which defined DeMille as a great showman, read the wonderful DeMille biography by Scott Eyman, “Empire of Dreams.” The one sheet is in very fine condition.

VERTIGO (1958) 17868

full.vertigo 1sh signed big file 17868

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock mystery thriller masterpiece, VERTIGO (1958) starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. This Hitchcock classic tells the story of a former San Francisco detective (Stewart) suffering from acrophobia who investigates the strange activities of an old friend’s wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. Hitchcock creates some of his most hypnotic scenes in this film as well as a general sense of unease and dread– even in seemingly banal situations. Bernard Herrmann’s excellent score is a perfect compliment to this complex and suspenseful story. The score is perhaps more important here than it most films, because much of the story is told simply with Stewart’s and Novak’s facial expressions and the music. Stewart gives one of the best performances of his career, and Novak is completely convincing in her dual roles. With artwork by the great Saul Bass, this original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine plus condition. This one sheet is signed by James Stewart. We have never seen another copy of this one sheet signed by Stewart.
