THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) 21077

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet poster for the John Ford iconic drama, THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, and John Carradine. This film is the story of the Joad family, who are forced to leave their land in Oklahoma because of drought and poverty. The characters are exquisitely brought to life from the pages of the John Steinbeck novel. Stunning black and white cinematography by Gregg Toland enhances the overwhelming feeling of desperation and emptiness that suffuses the entire film. When the Joads decide to abandon the dustbowl of Oklahoma and go to California to get jobs they’ve only heard about, they encounter every hardship imaginable along the way. And when they do finally arrive, they are forced to live in shantytowns and work for wages that barely prevent starvation. With incredibly powerful performances from the entire cast, this film remains a shockingly realistic yet poetic portrayal of the sufferings so many families experienced in the Great Depression. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. John Ford won the Oscar for Best Director and Jane Darwell deservedly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her unforgettable performance as Ma Joad. This spectacularly memorable cast is shown together in front of the art work by Thomas Hart Benton which was used for the campaign. This original one sheet is a top-tier example. We have graded it Very Fine Plus. Very minor
touch up at the folds and expertly linen-backed.

THREE BLIND MICE (1938) 9879

Original 20th Century-Fox Six Sheet Poster (81×81) for the William A. Seiter comedy, THREE BLIND MICE (1938) starring Loretta Young, Joel McCrea, David Niven, Stuart Erwin, Marjorie Weaver, Pauline Moore, Binnie Barnes, and Jane Darwell. The film has a plot straight out of the Hollywood playbook, but done here with wit and some style. Three sisters move to the Land of Milk and Honey – California of course – from the flatlands of Kansas (WIZARD OF OZ?) – to find a rich husband. The spearhead in this operation is Young, beautiful as ever, and posing as a social butterfly — and she soon finds Joel McCrea, presumed to be rich but actually broke. The other two sisters pose as her “staff” and they too seek Cupid’s arrow and in surprising ways. So the theme is The Path to True Love, marriage, matrimony, golddiggers! The Motion Picture Guide summarizes the film this way: “This is a delightful comedy, well scripted and directed with a sense of fun [by William A Seiter]. The players are clearly enjoying themselves making the most they can out of the good material. The easily adaptable plot later turned up in two remakes: MOON OVER MIAMI (1941) and THREE LITTLE GIRLS IN BLUE (1946).” The six sheet poster is gorgeous, a prime example of the 20th Century Fox style of posters with nice portraits, well done, of the principal players and a colorful layout. This original six sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition. Six sheets are generally printed on four panels and no exception here. The individual panels are butted together for display. Six sheets may be linen backed. Ask us about poster mounting and conservation.
