Stanley Kubrick replaced original director Anthony Mann, but it was really Kirk Douglas as Executive Producer who made many of the decisions. The film is a marvelous retelling of the revolt in 73 B.C. at a gladiatorial school, which mushrooms into a crisis for the Roman Republic. Opposing political factions by Olivier and Laughton try to use the revolt to further their political ends. Besides outstanding performances from the entire cast and expert direction by Kubrick, the film has beautiful cinematography by Russell Metty and a brilliant score by Alex North. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won five Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor to Ustinov and Best Cinematography to Metty. We have graded this poster as Very Good Plus. There is some paper abrasion near the top center. Colors are vivid. Some edge wear. This poster would be improved with Linen Backing. Roadshow posters are much more difficult to acquire than 35mm release material for this film – and better looking as well.

Original Universal Spanish Language One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger drama, BLACK NARCISSUS (1947) starring Deborah Kerr, Flora Robson, Jean Simmons, and Sabu. This is the story of Sister Clodah (Kerr) who is sent to establish a new convent in the Himalayas. The remote location, the foreign culture, and the mountain air all begin to have a strange effect on the sisters. The film is filled with many magical images, which are complimented brilliantly by Brian Easdale’s haunting score. The film rightfully won the Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. This original Spanish language one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition.

Androcles is arrested along with other Christians and condemned to death in the arena, where his life friend the lion refuses to kill him. Shaw was always hesitant about allowing his plays to be made into films. He found a competent producer in Gabriel Pascal, who loved Shaw’s works. Shaw gave him a contract to produce all his plays, including this one that was made after Shaw’s death. This original three sheet poster is folded and in fine condition—with only some scribbling on the reverse side, minor fold separation at the fold intersection, and minor smudges.

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Richard Brooks drama, ELMER GANTRY (1960) starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Arthur Kennedy, Dean Jagger, and Shirley Jones. Richard Brooks’ screenplay was adapted from the highly controversial novel by Sinclair Lewis, and no studio initially wanted to finance the film. The story deals with Gantry (Lancaster)– a fast-talking, hard drinking traveling salesman. He becomes fascinated with a charismatic female evangelist (Simmons) and teams up with her to “sell” religion to America in the 1920s. But Gantry’s sordid past catches up with him in the form of a prostitute named Lulu (Jones). The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It won three Oscars: Best Actor to Lancaster, Best Supporting Actress to Jones, and Best Adapted Screenplay to Brooks. This original one sheet poster is in near mint condition.
