His performance was so riveting that he was nominated for Best Actor, the first posthumous acting nomination in Academy Award history as Dean had been killed in an automobile accident in September 1955 at the age of twenty-four. Other Academy nominations included Best Director for Kazan and Best Screenplay for Paul Osborn’s adaptation of the popular John Steinbeck novel. Sellers is outstanding and hilarious as an uptight Jewish lawyer, who is engaged to be married but falls in love with a free-thinking and free-living “hippie” (Taylor-Young) and decides to “drop out” himself. The title is a tribute to Gertrude Stein’s lifelong partner (Toklas) who published a cookbook in 1954 that contained the first printed recipe for marijuana-laced fudge. This original window card is in very fine condition.
