WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (1962) 5377

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original French Poster (47×63) for the Robert Aldrich psycho-thriller, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (1962) starring Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and Victor Buono. The film chronicles the lives of two aging screen actresses who live as virtual recluses in an old Hollywood mansion. Jane (Davis), a popular child star, “cares” for her crippled sister Blanche (Crawford), whose career in later years eclipsed that of Jane. The film was a riveting psychological study, cast with astonishing actors, and magnificently directed and photographed. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards—including Best Actress for Davis and Best Supporting Actor for Buono. Over the years, because of the real life rivalry between the two superstars and the grand guignol execution of the story, BABY JANE has become a camp classic if not a revered horror film. Folded. Very Fine.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Curtis Bernhardt film noir thriller, POSSESSED (1947) starring Joan Crawford, Van Heflin, and Raymond Massey. Psychological thrillers were all the rage after the end of World War II. In this film Crawford plays a woman who becomes obsessed with Van Heflin—leading her to hallucinations, hysteria, and finally a breakdown. This film is certainly one of Joan Crawford’s best performances of her career, and her lively portrayal garnered her the first of her three nominations for Best Actress. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine condition.

Crawford gives one of the best performances of her career, and Franz Waxman’s musical score (for which he received an Academy Award nomination) adds a great deal to the dreamlike qualities of the film. This original scene lobby card is in very fine plus condition.

THE WOMEN (1939) 19867

full.The Women

Original MGM Three Sheet Poster (41.25×78) for the George Cukor dramatic comedy, THE WOMEN (1939) starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. Anita Loos adapted the screenplay from the popular Broadway play by Clare Booth Luce. The play opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 7, 1937 and played for 666 performances. The story revolves around wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer), who is totally unaware that her husband is having an affair with shop girl Crystal Allen (Crawford). There are over 130 roles in the movie, all played by women. Furthermore, all of the animals used (dogs and horses) were also female. Within two years of the release of this film, Shearer would retire permanently from the screen; within four years, Crawford would leave MGM at Louis B. Mayer’s “request.” MovieArt has received this poster back from the conservation firm where it was linen backed and restored and the result is spectacular. Very rare in this format. We know of only one occasion on which this style three sheet ever appeared in an auction. A spectacular image of Crawford — and two other major MGM stars, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. The photo was taken before the rebacking. We will post the new photo soon.

THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS (1952) 4695

full.thiswomanisdangerous-3sh-4695

Original Warner Brothers Three Sheet poster for the Felix Feist film THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS starring Joan Crawford, David Brian, Dennis Morgan and Philip Carey. The film was the last film that Crawford made to fulfill her contract with Warner Brothers. That contract spanned from the time of MILDRED PIERCE, an unqualified success, to 1952 with the release of THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS, part crime drama part soap opera. Crawford and Brian head up a gang of thieves; Crawford is the brains and Brian the muscle. And they also are “involved.” But after a particularly successful heist, Crawford goes off to a hospital to treat an eye malady. Subsequently, in a page straight out of DARK VICTORY, but without the attendant class, Crawford falls in love with her doctor, played by Dennis Morgan – his bedside manner, no doubt. But Brian is not taking that lying down and he…but stop! No spoilers here. A somewhat ordinary film of its type, but the poster shows the diva Crawford in her late Warner Brothers no-wire-hangers incarnation. And all in pink and in the pink as well. The three sheet is comprised of two different panels which are joined together to make one large-format poster. This poster was theater-used, but the two panels have not been glued together. There are some small tears, a few very small holes and general aging. However, the paper has good structural integrity. This poster could be linen backed very successfully. We have graded it as fine plus. Ask us about linen backing and poster conservation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original MGM Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Robert Z. Leonard romantic comedy, WHEN LADIES MEET (1941) starring Joan Crawford, Robert Taylor, Greer Garson, and Herbert Marshall. Garson portrays the wronged wife, Crawford plays the girl who wronged her, Marshall is Garson’s husband, and Robert Taylor plays a young man madly in love with Crawford. The film utilizes a clever plot device in that the two women in Marshall’s life have never met each other. This intelligent look at modern marriage has good performances, unique lighting, stunning set decoration, and beautiful costumes. This original scene card featuring Marshall and Crawford is in very fine plus condition.

BERSERK (1967) 18508

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for Jim O’Connolly’s BESERK (1967) starring Joan Crawford, Judy Geeson,Ty Hardin, Diana Dors and Michael Gough. This suspenseful murder mystery features suspects who are also performers in a traveling British circus. Joan Crawford looks absolutely smashing as the lead ringmaster and she is ably supported by Judy Geeson as her troubled, Carnaby Street-era daughter. If you’ve ever seen Crawford’s in STRAITJACKET, you have some idea of the suspenseful, over-the-top fun to be found in this late career venture. An actual circus (Billy Smart’s Circus) was utilized in the making of this camp classic. The poster is in folded and in near mint condition.

FLAMINGO ROAD (1949) 2897

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers Insert Poster (14×36) for the Michael Curtiz romantic drama, FLAMINGO ROAD (1949) starring Joan Crawford, Zachary Scott, Sydney Greenstreet, and David Brian. Carnival dancer Lane (Crawford) finds herself stranded in a southern town ruled by a corrupt political boss (Greenstreet), who tries every way he could think of to drive her out of town. But Joan winds up marrying Dan (Brian), another of the town’s ruling elite, and they move to “Flamingo Road,” an outward and visible sign of social success. The part of Lane was originally intended as a vehicle for Ann Sheridan, who turned down the role played by Crawford. This original insert poster is unfolded and in fine condition.

MILDRED PIERCE (1945) 20851

full.mildredpierce-3sh-20851

Original Warner Bros Three Sheet Poster (41×81) for the film-noir classic, MILDRED PIERCE (1945)– directed by Michael Curtiz (of CASABLANCA fame) and starring Joan Crawford, Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Ann Blyth, and Eve Arden. After her husband leaves her, Mildred Pierce becomes independent and successful, but she never gets the approval and respect that she deserves from her spoiled and vile daughter Veda. Everything about this film was excellent—a stunning cast, excellent direction from Curtiz, beautiful cinematography by Ernest Haller, and a wonderful score by Max Steiner. Joan Crawford deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and both Eve Arden and Ann Blyth were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenplay. As a rather bleak look at the exploitation a woman working in a man’s world can expect, this film was refreshingly frank for the time. This original three sheet poster is in fine plus to very fine condition. Three sheets are printed, generally, on two panels and are joined together for display. Three sheets may be linen backed and displayed on as an integral poster. Ask us about poster conservation.
