The story revolves around traveling salesman Virgil Smith (Crosby), who wants to sell gramophones in pre-war Austria-Hungry. He especially wants to sell one to Emperor Franz Joseph (Haydn). Wilder wanted the film to be a biting satire of the court of Franz Joseph, but Crosby had a lot of influence with the Paramount executives and insisted on the box office confectionary that the film ultimately became. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Musical Score for Victor Young. This original set of British front of house cards very from fine plus to very fine condition.

THE WOMEN (1939) 19867

full.The Women

Original MGM Three Sheet Poster (41.25×78) for the George Cukor dramatic comedy, THE WOMEN (1939) starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. Anita Loos adapted the screenplay from the popular Broadway play by Clare Booth Luce. The play opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 7, 1937 and played for 666 performances. The story revolves around wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer), who is totally unaware that her husband is having an affair with shop girl Crystal Allen (Crawford). There are over 130 roles in the movie, all played by women. Furthermore, all of the animals used (dogs and horses) were also female. Within two years of the release of this film, Shearer would retire permanently from the screen; within four years, Crawford would leave MGM at Louis B. Mayer’s “request.” MovieArt has received this poster back from the conservation firm where it was linen backed and restored and the result is spectacular. Very rare in this format. We know of only one occasion on which this style three sheet ever appeared in an auction. A spectacular image of Crawford — and two other major MGM stars, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. The photo was taken before the rebacking. We will post the new photo soon.

REBECCA (1940) 19239

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock gothic thriller, REBECCA (1940) starring Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, and Judith Anderson. Many critics consider this film to be Hitchcock’s first true masterpiece. The film was produced by David O. Selznick, with whom Hitchcock clashed from the beginning, due to Selznick’s obsessive control over the film. Olivier is perfect as a broken man living in the past, who marries a frightened and weak Fontaine. By the end of the film, she evolves into a mature and strong woman capable of holding her own. Sanders is positively hateful, and Anderson portrays one of the most coldly sadistic figures in cinematic history. Besides great acting and direction, the film has magnificent cinematography and a wonderfully haunting score by Franz Waxman. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Olivier, Best Actress for Fontaine, Best Supporting Actress for Judith Anderson, and Best Director for Hitchcock (his first director nomination). It won two Academy Awards—including Best Picture. This original one sheet poster is in fine plus condition with some restoration. Fixed rough and uneven borders. Fixed several small tears and missing chips. Poster presents extraordinarily well.

This original stone lithograph one sheet poster is in good condition.
