OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the Edward Ludwig action adventure, WAKE OF THE RED WITCH (1948) starring John Wayne, Gail Russell, Gig Young, Adele Mara, and Luther Adler. Set in the Dutch West Indies around 1860, the story revolves around a bitter rivalry between sea captain Wayne and ship owner Adler. Wayne plays one of the most sinister and cruelest characters of his career. He is alternately charming and broodingly malevolent, given to alcohol-fueled bouts of violence and self-loathing, his motivations often morally ambiguous. This original Belgian poster is linen-backed and in very fine plus condition.

When Wayne gets wounded in a bank robbery, he ends up knocking at the door and is nursed back to health by her. Wayne gives one of the best performances of his career, and Russell’s natural “angelic” qualities are memorable as well. Beautiful art on this Belgian poster. Linen-backed and in very fine plus condition.

THE SEARCHERS (1957) 21215

full.thesearchers-1sh-21217

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the John Ford iconic western adventure, THE SEARCHERS (1956) starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, and Natalie Wood. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this film as the 12th Greatest Movie of All Time, and in 2008 the AFI ranked the film as the number one greatest western. John Wayne gave the most winning and memorable performance of his career, and the film is reputed to have been his most favorite role. While the film is driven by racist hatred of Native Americans, both races are portrayed as ruthless and barbaric. The film was shot in Utah’s magnificent Monument Valley, and the Technicolor cinematography is simply stunning. Also, the score by Max Steiner is exceptional, and without it the impact of the film would be considerably diminished. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

The poster was a theater-used poster many years ago. Three sheets are generally printed on two separate panels which are joined for display. This poster has been assembled. The upper right-hand corner – in the border area – is missing a small chip. All the image area
is fine, however. A prime candidate for linen backing. Ask us about poster conservation.

Inside this light comedy, Ford manages in insert his trademark values of peace, brotherhood, and anti-racism. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition—with some small holes and tape repair, but with bright colors and good paper integrity.

CIRCUS WORLD (1965) 5222

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures One Sheet poster for the Henry Hathaway film CIRCUS WORLD (1964) starring John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth. Samuel Bronston was a colorful character who produced epic films in Europe which received the big 70mm distribution treatment from several of the Hollywood studios. He began this pattern with MGM. MGM were looking to follow up the huge success of BEN-HUR (1959) with another film. The movie was KING OF KINGS (1961) directed by Nicholas Ray. Other films followed – gigantic independent productions with big stars and distributed by big Hollywood studios: EL CID, THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, 55 DAYS AT PEKING. The last of these behemoths was CIRCUS WORLD, distributed by Paramount and intended for the Cinerama circuit. Life under the Big Top had been covered better by several other films, with their train wrecks, animal escapes, even mayhem. Here the attraction was The Duke of course, a somewhat long-in-the-tooth-for this-kind-of-thing Rita Hayworth, and the beautiful Claudia Cardinale. Veteran director Henry Hathaway was hired to helm the movie for the giant Cinerama screen. This poster is for the U.S. 35mm release of the movie. The poster has some staple holes in the corners, a small crease in the lower left corner. No fold separation. Some small pinholes.

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) 5564

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster – an odd size, 11×32, for the John Ford western film THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin. This is perhaps the last great John Ford western. The essential subject of the film is the truth of the American West as opposed to the Legend of it. Sadistic hoodlum Liberty Valence, played wonderfully by Lee Marvin, menaces a territorial town in the days before statehood. James Stewart is a young lawyer who comes to the west to settle down and bring his lawyerly ways with him. John Wayne is a rough-hewn rancher steeped in the values of the old west. Which one of these men end the career of Liberty Valence with a bullet? This is the question on which the film pivots. Vera Miles is the woman who loves them both. This is one of the really unusual and beautiful John Wayne posters. Very Fine. Art by Leszek Holdanowicz.

THE GREEN BERETS (1968) 18497

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Ray Kellogg, John Wayne and Mervyn LeRoy war film, THE GREEN BERETS (1968) starring John Wayne, David Janssen, Jim Hutton, Aldo Ray, Mako, George Takai, Raymond St. Jacques, Jack Soo, Patrick Wayne, Irene Tsu and Mike Henry. When this film was first released, at the height of Vietnam, critics and audiences alike had a marked disinterest in its gung ho, jingoistic approach to the war. Similarly, the use of US locations (for the jungle scenes) and the casting of an almost elderly John Wayne threatened the overall verisimilitude of the project. Today, the film can be enjoyed as an unsubtle but patriotic look at the Special Forces that elevate the US military to the highest level of warfare. The one sheet offered here is in good condition only. It has a spill of some kind of liquid across David Janssen’s face which results in this grading. This poster should be linen backed in order present nicely. Priced appropriately.

full.flyingleathernecks-insert-6720

Original RKO Insert Poster (14×36) for the Nicholas Ray action war drama, FLYING LEATHERNECKS (1951) starring John Wayne, Robert Ryan, Don Taylor, and Janis Carter. The “leatherneck” in the title refers to early Marine uniforms that had a leather collar, which was intended to protect the throat from knife wounds. Wayne plays the commander of a marine unit sent to Guadalcanal to give support to the ground troops. He is short on planes and pilots and drives his men relentlessly. He gets into a leadership conflict with his executive officer (Ryan) over training methods and the sheer volume of missions. The air combat shots are impressive, and Director Ray gets excellent performances from the entire cast. This original insert poster is folded and in very fine condition.

full.brannigan-1sh-9190

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Douglas Hickox crime drama, BRANNIGAN (1975) starring John Wayne, Richard Attenborough, Judy Geeson, and Mel Ferrer. In this film, the “Duke” does London. He plays a Chicago police detective who is sent to London to bring back an American mobster who is being held for extradition. But when the mobster is kidnapped—an amusing, low-key caper begins that culminates in a well-choreographed chase through the streets of London, a hilarious if typical Wayne bar brawl, and several attacks by a hit man. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition with no fold separation and vivid color.

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Otto Preminger war drama, IN HARM’S WAY (1965)—starring John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Patricia Neal, and Brandon De Wilde. At first this film seems to be about the politics of Navy hierarchy because Wayne plays a naval officer who gets blamed for the Pearl Harbor debacle. But really it is a film more about the personal lives and struggles of the men and women in World War II. Preminger offers a skillful blend of war drama and soap opera with memorable acting performances by his entire cast. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition.
