Original RKO Advance One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Victor Fleming historical biography, JOAN OF ARC (1948)—starring Ingrid Bergman, Francis L. Sullivan, J. Carrol Naish, and Jose Ferrer. This fascinating war drama takes place in the 15th century during the Hundred Years War between France and England. Joan of Arc is a maid who leads her country in a time of war. But her religious visions are denounced and she is put on trial, condemned as a witch, and burned at the stake. Bergman was totally immersed in her role and absolutely radiates “purity.” Unfortunately, just as the film went into general release, the scandal broke about Bergman’s affair with Roberto Rosellini and the resulting pregnancy. This unwanted publicity caused the film to tank at the box office, but it did receive much critical acclaim. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including a Best Actress nomination for Bergman. The film won the Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. This original advance one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition, with only two minor fold separations.

This was the third time this popular story by W. Somerset Maugham was made into a film. The 1928 silent version was titled SADIE THOMPSON and starred Gloria Swanson, a performance for which she received an Academy Awards nomination for Best Actress. The story was used again in 1932 in the film RAIN, starring Joan Crawford. In this film Rita Hayworth plays the role of the woman of questionable repute who is trying to remake her life on a South Sea island. This beautiful Technicolor version was filmed on the sparsely populated Hawaiian island of Kauai. The film did receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. This original three sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

This is an original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Otto Preminger film noir, WHIRLPOOL (1949) starring Gene Tierney, Richard Conte, Jose Ferrer, and Charles Bickford. This film is part psychological drama and part film noir. The beautiful wife (Tierney) of a famous psychoanalyst Dr. William Sutton (Conte) gets caught stealing an expensive pin from a department store. An infamous astrologer David Korvo (Ferrer) comes to her aid and uses hypnosis to make her an unconscious party to an elaborate scheme involving murder. All of the acting performances are good, especially Tierney who does an outstanding job at portraying both the vulnerability and desperation of her character; indeed, the actress used the film as a mini “comeback” after a two-year absence. The black and white cinematography and use of the camera are very good. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.
