THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) SM8

full.overtherainbow-sheet music

Original Sheet Music (9×12) for the song “Over the Rainbow” sung in the Victor Fleming adventure fantasy, THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. Perhaps the most famous movie song of all time, “Over the Rainbow,” with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, was sung by Garland in the film. The first album of songs from the film was issued by Decca Records in 1940 and featured only Garland from the cast singing “Over the Rainbow” and “The Jitterbug.” The Ken Darby Singers sang the rest of the songs on the album. It was not until 1958 that an official soundtrack recording was released. Although the photo shows the image slightly eclipsed, the real sheet music has not been trimmed in any way and is in very fine condition.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) 21377

full.meetmeinstlouis-1sh-21377

Original U.S. one sheet poster for the Vincente Minnelli classic musical romance, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) starring Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, Mary Astor, and Lucille Bremer. Set in St. Louis in 1904, this film creates an unabashed nostalgia for an idealized America in an age of innocence before the two World Wars. One of Vincente Minnelli’s finest films, and one of the crown jewels of MGM, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS is all that one could ever hope for in an MGM musical. The film tells the story of the Smith family, living in St. Louis Missouri just before the time of the St. Louis World’s Fair. The Smith girls are coming of age, except for the darling Tootie Smith, immortally portrayed by Margaret O’Brien. When their father threatens to upend their happy life in St. Louis by taking a job in New York, each of the girls must
come to terms with change in their own way. One of the greatest of Garland’s roles, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS has become a favorite family film. The one sheet is unmounted and in very fine condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original MGM Advance One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Jack Haley Jr. musical documentary, THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT (1974) starring Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, and Esther Williams. This holy grail of musical documentaries lets the MGM stars present their favorite moments from the studio’s 50 year history, presenting both the still-famous as well as the once-famous. Even though few of the films included had been restored at the time of release—THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT is still a feast of brilliant colors, gorgeous costumes, and spectacular dance numbers. This original advance one sheet poster is folded and in good condition—with some tape on both the front and reverse sides.

I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963) 2370

full.icouldgoonsinging-1sh-2370

Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Ronald Neame musical drama, I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963)—starring Judy Garland, Dirk Bogarde, and Jack Klugman. This was Garland’s last film, made just prior to starting her controversial TV series. Her character, Jenny Bowman, is a thinly disguised self-portrait with outstanding singing and full-bodied emotional acting. The film was panned at its premier for being old school melodrama, after a troubled production schedule. Perhaps many people preferred to remember the great star as their beloved Dorothy and not see her as a troubled adult with a scandalous past. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition, with only a tear in the upper right hand corner and some pinholes. Now the poster is regarded as quite good.

PIGSKIN PARADE (1936) 10157

full.pigskinparade 1sh

Original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the David Butler sports musical, PIGSKIN PARADE (1936)—starring Sturat Erwin, Patsy Kelly, Jack Haley, Betty Grable, and Judy Garland. The most notable thing about this film is the feature film debut of 14-year-old Judy Garland as the young hillbilly Sairy Dodd. Garland’s handful of comic scenes and her three songs served as a wake-up call to MGM executives, and she was never “loaned-out” again in her 15 years at MGM. We have been asked if this poster has art by Al Hirschfeld. There are some conflicting opinions on this, but the answer is most probably not. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition.

LIFE BEGINS FOR ANDY HARDY (1941)

full.lifebeginsforandyhardy-insert

Original MGM Insert Poster (14×36) for the Goerge B. Seitz romantic comedy, LIFE BEGINS FOR ANDY HARDY (1941). Wonderful photography of America’s favorite teenagers of the late 1930s and early 1940s, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. Garland appeared three times as the character Betsy Booth in the Hardy series. This was her final appearance in these films, and the movie is not the usual Hardy fare. The teens must face incipient adulthood in a world soon to be at war. Mickey moves to New York City, and soon finds that the Big Apple is a place with girls – and even more serious problems, just like anywhere else. LIFE BEGINS FOR ANDY HARDY has the most intelligent script of the series. Even though Mickey Rooney would go on to make several more of these, MGM would never again try to solemnize the ritual in quite this way. This poster is on an old linen and its overall condition is very good, and while it would frame nicely, it could be rebacked. Rare in this format, we think it is the best poster for the film.

GIRL CRAZY (1943) M21052

full.girlcrazy Ins M10003

This is an original MGM Insert Poster (14×36) for the Norman Taurog and Busby Berkeley musical comedy, GIRL CRAZY (1943) starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. Besides the on-screen magic of Judy and Mickey (their eighth film together and many believe their best), the film boasts one of the best scores of Ira and George Gershwin songs ever, captivating performances by the Tommy Dorsey Band, and even a spectacular Busby Berkeley staging of the sensational “I Got Rhythm.” For Judy, Mickey, and Gershwin fans—this film is a treasure. This original insert poster is in very fine condition.

A STAR IS BORN (1954) 1940

full.astarisborn Cvrp 1940

Original Warner Brothers Video Release Poster (21×28) for the George Cukor romantic musical, A STAR IS BORN (1954) starring Judy Garland and James Mason. This was a remake of the original 1937 version of the film starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March. But this later version will be remembered as Judy Garland’s last leading role in a Hollywood film and is marked by a pervasive sense of melancholy. Garland plays Esther Blodgett, an obscure but successful band singer who is transformed into the movie star Vicki Lester—thanks to an alcoholic, tormented “has-been” named Norman Maine (Mason). Garland makes the most of the masterful songs of Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin, the most significant being her wonderful rendition of “The Man That Got Away.” The film was nominated for six Academy Awards– including Best Actor for Mason, Best Actress for Garland, Best Original Song to Arlen and Gershwin, and Best Musical Score to Ray Heindorf. This first Warner Brothers video release poster with art by Richard Amsel is folded and in near mint condition.
