This is an original roadshow MGM/CINERAMA One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Stanley Kubrick sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. Based on the Arthur C. Clarke story called “The Sentinel,” the film is essentially a story about evolution. Sometime in the distant past, “something” nudged evolution by placing a monolith on earth that imparts the knowledge of tool use to early humanoids. Evolution then enables mankind to reach the moon, where yet another monolith is “deliberately buried” and emits a signal aimed at Jupiter. Then, six astronauts (four in hibernation) and a very sophisticated computer embark on a journey to Jupiter in hopes of finding the source. The pace is slow with incredible attention to detail, which very realistically envisions the future of technology. The special effects that were pioneered for this film are still breathtaking by today’s standards. Kurick’s use of a classical music score creates a haunting atmosphere of awe, mystery, and intrigue. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for Kubrick and Best Screenplay for Clarke and Kubrick. Kubrick did win the Oscar for Best Special Visual Effects. This original one sheet poster with artwork by Robert “Bob” McCall is in fine plus condition. Two minor fold separations urge us to grade this excellent example as fine plus. MovieArt will pay for linen backing for this poster if desired. Unbacked.

THE FOX (1968) 4035

Original Claridge Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Mark Rydell adult sex drama, THE FOX (1967) starring Sandy Dennis, Anne Heywood, and Keir Dullea. The film is very atmospheric, making you almost feel the cold as you watch it. Although the film dealt with the lesbian relationship between Dennis and Heywood—the telling of their story and romance is intelligent, subtle, and very mature in the hands of the very talented writer D. H. Lawrence. The musical score by Lalo Schifrin, who received an Academy Award nomination, perfectly complements this sensitive and beautiful film. This arrestingly designed one sheet poster is in good condition, with medium sized interior tear in the middle of the poster. Linen-backing would repair this problem handsomely.

Original MGM 1970 Re-Release One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Stanley Kubrick sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)—starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, and William Sylvester. This poster is one in a series of one-sheet posters issued by MGM after the initial release of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in 1968. The poster is considered original, but the first campaign for the film featured illustrations by Frank McCall and even some color photographic posters. This poster, with its tagline, “The Ultimate Trip”, was designed by Mike Kaplan and is said to have been issued to capitalize on what MGM came to see as a growing phenomenon — people showing up to see the film while tripping on psychedelic drugs. It became de rigueur to see the film in an altered state. This film was certainly an “event” film, and the movie played for two to three years in one venue or another. MGM did not officially re-release the film until 1974. The first “starchild” poster is utterly undated and VERY rare, but subsequent editions of the poster are dated 1969, 1970, and 1971. This folded copy is in very fine condition with minimal fold separation.
