The story revolves around traveling salesman Virgil Smith (Crosby), who wants to sell gramophones in pre-war Austria-Hungry. He especially wants to sell one to Emperor Franz Joseph (Haydn). Wilder wanted the film to be a biting satire of the court of Franz Joseph, but Crosby had a lot of influence with the Paramount executives and insisted on the box office confectionary that the film ultimately became. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Musical Score for Victor Young.
