Adapted by James Goldman from his witty and sublimely literate, 1966 Broadway play, this film is one of the crowning achievements in cinematic storytelling. The tale revolves around the aging King Henry II (O’Toole) who must choose the successor to his throne from among his three sons (Hopkins, Castle, and Terry), while bringing his estranged and dysfunctional clan together for the Christmas holidays. Boorman’s masterful direction, stunning armor and costumes, lavish sets, and Alex Thomson’s beautiful cinematography for which he received an Academy Award nomination—all work together to evoke a mythic splendor and power.
