THE WOMEN (1939) 19867

full.The Women

Original MGM Three Sheet Poster (41.25×78) for the George Cukor dramatic comedy, THE WOMEN (1939) starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. Anita Loos adapted the screenplay from the popular Broadway play by Clare Booth Luce. The play opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 7, 1937 and played for 666 performances. The story revolves around wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer), who is totally unaware that her husband is having an affair with shop girl Crystal Allen (Crawford). There are over 130 roles in the movie, all played by women. Furthermore, all of the animals used (dogs and horses) were also female. Within two years of the release of this film, Shearer would retire permanently from the screen; within four years, Crawford would leave MGM at Louis B. Mayer’s “request.” MovieArt has received this poster back from the conservation firm where it was linen backed and restored and the result is spectacular. Very rare in this format. We know of only one occasion on which this style three sheet ever appeared in an auction. A spectacular image of Crawford — and two other major MGM stars, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. The photo was taken before the rebacking. We will post the new photo soon.

The overall condition is fine plus. The title card is in Fine Plus condition. The other cards range from Fine to Very Fine. The cards a little smudged in places, although some are quite clean. Fine to Very Fine condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Paramount Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Mark Sandrich war drama, SO PROUDLY WE HAIL (1943) starring Claudette Colbert, Paulette Goddard, Vernoica Lake, and George Reeves. This film revolves around a group of nurses returning from the war in the Philippines who recall their experiences in war and love. Although made during the war, this is not a war propaganda film by any means. It is one of the first films to put women in the spotlight as true war heroes. The script was written using the journals and diaries of actual nurses serving in the Pacific theater. This original scene lobby card is in very good plus condition.

Original MGM Set of Three Scene Lobby Cards (trimmed to 10.75×13.75) for the Robert B. Sinclair romantic drama, DRAMATIC SCHOOL (1938)—starring Luise Rainer, Paulette Goddard, Alan Marshal, and Lana Turner. The story takes place in France and concerns a young dramatic school student who fantasies actually come true due to series of happy accidents. This was the last film of Rainer’s contract with MGM. What she wanted was to be offered better roles like the ones given to Greta Garbo, but for MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer, there was only room for one Garbo on the MGM lot. All three scene cards are in very fine condition. These cards were once bound in a homemade scrapbook, and, therefore, they were all stitched in on the left side. All three cards have also been slightly trimmed. Nevertheless, the image area on all three cards is very fine to near mint.

full.anidealhusband-3sh

Original 20th Century Fox Three Sheet Poster (41×81) for the Alexander Korda comedy, AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1947) starring Paulette Goddard, Michael Wilding, Diana Wynyard, and Hugh Williams. Adapted from a popular Oscar Wilde play, this Victorian drawing room comedy focuses on the dilemma of a prominent British politician, who wants to expose a financial fraud but who is threatened with personal ruin if he does. Besides the very witty and clever dialogue, the ladies are sumptuously costumed by Cecil Beaton. Big stone lithograph image of Paulette Goddard as Mrs. Laura Cheveley. Lajos Biro wrote the screenplay based on Wilde’s famous play, but nowhere in the film is Wilde credited. But on this U.S. poster (the film is British) Wilde’s name is prominent. This original three sheet poster is folded and in very good condition. There is some fold deterioration in one area. This is a beautiful Fox stone lithograph, which should be linen backed. Ask us about linen backing. And read our post on this site about poster restorations.
