Shot in 29 days on a tight budget, the film is set in a small town in California on the last night in 1962 this group of teenagers will be together after graduation. The wonderful writing, fine performances, and superb directing produced a film with characters with whom nearly everyone in 1973 could identify. The film received 5 Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Clark, Best Director for Lucas, and Best Picture. This group of still photographs vary from very fine to near mint condition.

A close encounter of the third kind is an actual meeting with an animated alien being associated with a UFO; not just a sighting or a physical effect from contact with the spacecraft. In Spielberg’s classic film, several ordinary Americans find themselves drawn to a remote part of the American plains where they will literally find themselves in the presence of extraordinary beings from another world. This six sheet for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is one of the few six sheet posters for a Spielberg film. By the end of the seventies the studios had almost quit making these six sheet format posters. We had seen this story before; the film is a remake of Renoir’s BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING (1932). Nolte stars as a down-and-out bum who tries to drown himself in the swimming pool of a rich but dysfunctional family. When the husband (Dreyfuss) saves him and takes him in over the strenuous objections of his social-climbing wife (Midler), the real fun begins. Before long, the homeless bum is running the whole house and trying to straighten out the lives of everyone in the family. This original one sheet poster is rolled and in near mint condition.

This film was a box office phenomenon, grossing more than a half billion dollars and becoming the highest grossing movie until STAR WARS took the lead two years later. The movie established Spielberg as a filmmaker of first rank and helped the careers of all the major actors. The mechanical shark cost more than a quarter million dollars to create and can be seen today on Universal’s movie tour. The poster art is sensational, and was used by Universal in a carefully planned advertising campaign to attract huge audiences by the time the movie opened. This original one sheet poster is in very fine plus condition, expertly linen-backed.

Original Walt Disney Productions One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Henry Selick animated musical film, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (1996) starring Paul Terry, Jane Leeves, Joanna Lumley, and the voices of Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon. It’s a story about James (Terry), an orphan raised by his terrible aunts (Leeves and Lumley) who befriends and goes on adventures with humanesque insects who live inside a giant peach. The film begins and ends with live action but is all animation in the rest of the film. This wonderful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic dreamlike children’s story has superb animation and a wonderful musical score by Randy Newman, who received an Academy Award nomination. This original rolled one sheet poster is in very fine plus condition.
