The film is based on the Theodore Dreiser novel, An American Tragedy (1925.) This directorial masterpiece by Stevens is considered by many critics to be among the best performances in the acting careers of Clift, Taylor, and Winters. This film about doomed love, the striving for upward mobility, and a descent into darkness was the winner of six Academy Awards including Best Director to Stevens. The film was also nominated for Best Picture as well as Best Actor (Clift) and Best Actress (Winters).
