Original United Artists One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Richard Brooks drama, ELMER GANTRY (1960) starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Arthur Kennedy, Dean Jagger, and Shirley Jones. Richard Brooks’ screenplay was adapted from the highly controversial novel by Sinclair Lewis, and no studio initially wanted to finance the film. The story deals with Gantry (Lancaster)– a fast-talking, hard drinking traveling salesman. He becomes fascinated with a charismatic female evangelist (Simmons) and teams up with her to “sell” religion to America in the 1920s. But Gantry’s sordid past catches up with him in the form of a prostitute named Lulu (Jones). The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It won three Oscars: Best Actor to Lancaster, Best Supporting Actress to Jones, and Best Adapted Screenplay to Brooks. This original one sheet poster is in near mint condition.

THE MUSIC MAN (1962) 6402

themusicman-italian-79x55-6402

Original Italian 79×55 for the Morton DaCosta film of the Meredith Wilson musical, THE MUSIC MAN (1962)—starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, and Hermione Gingold. This film is certainly one of the best film adaptations of a Broadway musical. The original Broadway production of THE MUSIC MAN opened at the Majestic Theater on December 19, 1957, won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1958, and ran for 1375 performances. Even though Robert Preston had never appeared in a musical before or even sang a note, the role turned out to be one of his most memorable performances, and he won the 1958 Tony Award for Best Actor in a musical. Preston repeated his role for the Warner Brothers film version opposite Shirley Jones. The film version preserved all of the charm of the stage hit. This Italian poster is far superior to any U.S. poster for the film, accenting the scarlet uniform of the band director. Professor Harold Hill! Colors are vivid, no fold separations, but in the border area a small chip is missing. A nice example of this poster.

This is an original 20th Century Fox Insert Poster (14×36) for the Henry King musical, CAROUSEL (1956)—starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones and Cameron Mitchell. This is the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s brilliant and popular stage musical about the tragic life of Billy Bigelow who, after a violent and premature death, asks to be sent down from heaven to try and make amends for the mistakes he made in his life. MacRae and Jones are perfectly cast, and their singing voices beautifully fill the roles. This original insert poster is in very good condition, with only a small chip missing in the right border.

BEDTIME STORY (1964) 19811

Original Universal Pictures Window Card (14×22) for the Ralph Levy comedy, BEDTIME STORY (1964) starring David Niven, Marlon Brando, and Shirley Jones. This is the story of two gigolos who vie to see which of the two is better at his profession. David Niven gives one of the funniest performances of his career, and Brando also shows his great talent as a comic performer. It is clearly reminiscent of and inspired by the films of Rock Hudson and Doris Day; indeed, the film was originally written for them and Cary Grant but eventually recast with Niven, Brando, and Jones. This original window card is in very fine condition.
