PSYCHO (1960) 16231

full.psycho-6sh-16231

Original Paramount Pictures Six Sheet Poster (81×81) for the Alfred Hitchcock horror-thriller masterpiece, PSYCHO (1960)—starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and John Gavin. Considered by many critics to be the best horror movie of all time, this film was superlative in every way: its screenplay by Joseph Stefano, based on the novel by Robert Bloch, is extraordinary; each performance is pitch-perfect; the cinematography of John L. Russell is beautiful; and the score by Bernard Herrmann is exceptional. However, the outstanding direction by Hitchcock is the crowning touch of this great film. The handling of every nuance—gestures, glances, sudden changes in lighting—is masterful. The acting by Janet Leigh has often been praised, but the performance by Anthony Perkins with his facial tics and half-swallowed words is subtle, cool, unsettling, and just plain creepy. Prior to PSYCHO, horror movies were monsters, zombies, werewolves, and vampires. This film was the first true “psychological thriller.” Though we have become jaded with legions of realistic gore films since this movie was released, seeing a nude woman murdered in the shower was something no one had experienced yet in 1960. This original six sheet poster is unbacked, and in fine plus condition. Some minor condition issues exist, and this poster is a prime candidate for linen backing and display — or just to own as an artifact of this important Hitchcock movie.  We do recommend linen backing for this poster.  Please ask us about poster restoration services.  We have shown this poster as the four individual panels which make up the full poster.  Large photos are available of each panel.  Please email us for details.

But rumors begin to surface that Robertson is in fact a deranged maniac. Things become even more complicated when a woman (Miles) claiming to be Robertson’s first wife shows up. Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the David Miller drama, BACK STREET (1961) starring Susan Hayward, John Gavin, Vera Miles, and Charles Drake. Hayward portrays an impossibly chic fashion designer who falls in love Gavin, a married department store heir. Miles plays Gavin’s alcoholic wife, who is prone to falling down drunk at parties and threatening suicide. This soap opera began Hayward’s descent into strictly camp territory. This original Belgian poster is in very fine plus condition.

THE SEARCHERS (1957) 21215

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the John Ford iconic western adventure, THE SEARCHERS (1956) starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, and Natalie Wood. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this film as the 12th Greatest Movie of All Time, and in 2008 the AFI ranked the film as the number one greatest western. John Wayne gave the most winning and memorable performance of his career, and the film is reputed to have been his most favorite role. While the film is driven by racist hatred of Native Americans, both races are portrayed as ruthless and barbaric. The film was shot in Utah’s magnificent Monument Valley, and the Technicolor cinematography is simply stunning. Also, the score by Max Steiner is exceptional, and without it the impact of the film would be considerably diminished. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) 5564

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster – an odd size, 11×32, for the John Ford western film THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin. This is perhaps the last great John Ford western. The essential subject of the film is the truth of the American West as opposed to the Legend of it. Sadistic hoodlum Liberty Valence, played wonderfully by Lee Marvin, menaces a territorial town in the days before statehood. James Stewart is a young lawyer who comes to the west to settle down and bring his lawyerly ways with him. John Wayne is a rough-hewn rancher steeped in the values of the old west. Which one of these men end the career of Liberty Valence with a bullet? This is the question on which the film pivots. Vera Miles is the woman who loves them both. This is one of the really unusual and beautiful John Wayne posters. Very Fine. Art by Leszek Holdanowicz.

THE WRONG MAN (1956) 20198

Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Alfred Hitchcock crime drama, THE WRONG MAN (1956) starring Henry Fonda, Vera Miles, Anthony Quayle, and Harold J. Stone. This film tells the true story of Manny Balestrero (Fonda), a club musician unjustly accused of an armed robbery. Though Manny vehemently protest his innocence, his actions at every turn seem to belie his guilt. Instead of the usual Hitchcock cameo appearance, the director narrates the prologue, the only time he actually spoke in any of his films. Fonda gives an excellent performance of the quietly stunned Manny who slowly descends into total helplessness and powerlessness as he wends his way through the criminal justice system. This original scene card is in very good condition, with only minor edge wear and some pinholes.

This is an original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Melville Shavelson biographical drama, BEAU JAMES (1957) starring Bob Hope, Vera Miles, and Paul Douglas. Based on the biography by Gene Fowler, this is the story of the political career of Jimmy Walker, the flamboyant and somewhat corrupt mayor of New York City from 1926-1932. The film was Hope’s last attempt at a serious dramatic role, and although his performance was good, he realized his real appeal was in making comedies. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition.
