In the style of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, some of MGM’s junior league performers have a chance to “put on a show” of their own in the charming piece of nostalgia from the Culver City backlot. Original MGM Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Edwin L. Marin comedy, GOLD RUSH MAISIE (1940) starring Ann Southern, Lee Bowman, Slim Summerville, and Virginia Weidler. In a role originally intended for Jean Harlow, Southern portrays the brassy Brooklyn burlesque dancer Maisie Ravier. Southern made ten films playing this character, and she also played Maisie on a popular CBS radio program from 1945—1947. Though primarily a comedy, this film has a serious side when Maisie meets a family of dust bowl farmers who have lost their farm and become migrant workers. Except for THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940), very few scripts of the day dealt sympathetically with the plight of these families. Ann Southern remains one of the most underrated figures in Hollywood’s history. This lobby card is in very fine to near mint condition.
