FREAKS (1932) 16444

Original c1960 Re-Release Poster (23×29) for the Tod Browning horror drama, FREAKS (1932) starring Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams, and Olga Baclanova. Browning had been a member of a traveling circus in his early years, and much of the film draws from his personal experiences. He took the bold step of casting mostly actual carnival performers. In truth, the film is a sad and sympathetic look at the way “abnormalities” were treated in the early part of the 20th century. The two “normal” people are the real monsters who lie, steal, and kill—while the “freaks” are quite likeable and charming. The film really bombed at the box office and nearly ended Browning’s career. This re-release poster is probably a 16mm non-theatrical poster dating from the 1960s. This poster was probably printed by Film Incorporated, a non-theatrical distributor for colleges, military bases etc. The style of the poster was modeled after the only theatrical re-release (by Dwain Esper) in 1949. Condition fine plus. Unfolded. Minor ding in the top edge, minor rumpling.

Original Universal Pictures Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Christy Cabanne horror adventure, THE MUMMY’S HAND (1940) starring Dick Foran, Peggy Moran, Wallace Ford, and Tom Tyler as the Mummy. This is the story of a couple of comical, out-of-work archeologists (Foran and Ford) who discover evidence of the burial place of the ancient Egyptian princess Ananka. This film was not a sequel to Karloff’s THE MUMMY (1932) but the start of an entirely different series of films featuring the mummy Kharis, played in this feature by Tyler and by Lon Chaney Jr. in the subsequent features. This original scene lobby card is in fine condition—with a corner missing, numerous pin holes, staining in the border, and a 1″ tear in the lower left section of the image. Only two scene cards show the mummy and this is one of them. Not easily found.

EMPLOYEE’S ENTRANCE (1933) 16290

Original First National Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the depression-era, department store drama, EMPLOYEE’S ENTRANCE (1933) directed by Roy Del Ruth and starring Warren William, Loretta Young, and Wallace Ford. 12,000 workers pass through the “employee’s entrance” of New York’s Franklin Monroe & Co department store in 1933, but the firm’s financial condition is going down fast. William is an amoral, conniving, tyrannical manager, and Loretta Young (at age 20) is a new sales girl who sleeps with William in order to get her job. Ford is a rising star in the store and secretly married to Young. But even though William is a tyrant, he also struggles to avoid laying off thousands of employees in a fight to the death with the bankers. The screenplay is well written, fast paced, and witty. This was a “pre-code” film and seems quite risque for the time. This era of social frankness would not reemerge until the counter-culture of the 1960′s. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in fine plus condition. The colors are vivid, and there is no missing paper. There is some minimal repair to fold separations. A truly stunning “pre-code” poster.
