PSYCHO (1960) 16231

full.psycho-6sh-16231

Original Paramount Pictures Six Sheet Poster (81×81) for the Alfred Hitchcock horror-thriller masterpiece, PSYCHO (1960) starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and John Gavin. Considered by many critics to be the best horror movie of all time, this film was superlative in every way: its screenplay by Joseph Stefano, based on the novel by Robert Bloch, is extraordinary; each performance is pitch-perfect; the cinematography of John L. Russell is beautiful; and the score by Bernard Herrmann is exceptional. However, the outstanding direction by Hitchcock is the crowning touch of this great film. The handling of every nuance—gestures, glances, sudden changes in lighting—is masterful. The acting by Janet Leigh has often been praised, but the performance by Anthony Perkins with his facial tics and half-swallowed words is subtle, cool, unsettling, and just plain creepy. Prior to PSYCHO, horror movies were monsters, zombies, werewolves, and vampires. This film was the first true “psychological thriller.” Though we have become jaded with legions of realistic gore films since this movie was released, seeing a nude woman murdered in the shower was something no one had experienced yet in 1960. This original six sheet poster is unbacked, and in fine plus condition. Some minor condition issues exist, and this poster is a prime candidate for linen backing and display — or just to own as an artifact of this important Hitchcock movie.  We do recommend linen backing for this poster.  Please ask us about poster restoration services.  We have shown this poster as the four individual panels which make up the full poster.  Large photos are available of each panel.  Please email us for details.

Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the Alfred Hitchcock horror thriller, THE BIRDS (1963) starring Tippi Hedren, Suzanne Pleshette, Rod Taylor, and Jessica Tandy. When Hedren’s character travels to a seaside town, the local birds begin attacking the residents with increasing regularity and escalating viciousness. Not knowing why the birds resort to this psychotic behavior only adds to the feeling of unrelenting terror. This original Belgian poster is folded and in fine plus condition.

THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955) 8633

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock comedy thriller, THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955) starring Edmund Gwenn, Mildred Natwick, John Forsythe, and Shirley MacLaine in her first screen roll. While many Hitchcock films had humor in them, this was full-fledged black comedy, which was mostly a subtle satire of 50’s morality. The acting performances are superb and are the most delightful aspect of the film– as there are no expected Hitchcock action sequences, like a spectacular climax on a national monument. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition.

ROPE (1948) 17085

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Belgian Poster (Trimmed to 13×21) for the Alfred Hitchcock mystery thriller, ROPE (1948) starring James Stewart, Joan Chandler, John Dall, and Farley Granger. Brandon (Dall) and Phillip (Granger) strangle their “inferior” classmate, hide his body in their apartment, and invite his friends and family to a dinner party. As the evening wears on, Brandon becomes ever more bolder, while Phillip begins to regret what they have done. The plot is simple, the characters complex, and Hitchcock’s treatment of the Leopold and Loeb parallel quite deft. This original Belgian poster is in fine plus condition, with lower left corner torn off.

THE FAMILY PLOT (1976) 2281

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Universal Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock comedy thriller, FAMILY PLOT (1976)—starring Karen Black, Bruce Dern, Barbara Harris, and William Devane. This was the last film for legendary director Hitchcock—amazing when you consider his career started in the silent era. This lighthearted crime thriller is about a phony psychic (Harris) and her private detective boyfriend (Dern) who encounter a pair of serial kidnappers (Black and Devane). The film is quite fun and entertaining with strong central characters, good supporting cast, humor, innuendo, mystery, and—most especially—suspense. This original one sheet poster is folded and in fine plus condition, with an irregular crease but no fold separations.

Original Paramount Pictures 1962 Re-Release Half Sheet for the Alfred Hitchcock crime thriller, REAR WINDOW (1954) starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr. Considered by many critics to be one of Hitchcock’s masterpieces, this film tells the story of a wheelchair bound photographer (Stewart), who spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced that one of them has committed murder. The film focuses on the seduction of crime, not in committing it but in the act of discovering it. The entire movie was shot on one set, the largest indoor set ever built at Paramount studios up to that time. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. This re-release half sheet enjoys an image of Hitch himself on the poster and is in very fine condition. A fine alternative to the original year of issue posters. Re-release posters have been the recipient of increased respect among collectors in recent years.

HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS (1988) 15576

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original one sheet poster for the Fred Olen Ray masterpiece HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS (1988) starring Gunnar Hansen, Linnea Quigley, and Jay Richardson. They say that Hollywood is particularly inept and taking a good look at itself as a subject. Up there with SUNSET BOULEVARD and THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL is Fred Olen Ray’s seminal treatment of tinsel town. The list of titles for Ray’s films is amazing: HONEY BRITCHES, ATTACK OF THE 60 FOOT CENTERFOLDS, BIKINI HOEDOWN, BILLY FRANKENSTEIN, INVISIBLE MOM. Gunnar Hansen, of course, has sliced and diced the very best. Linnea Quigley is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated screamers. Bigger than Paul Lynde! The poster is a great condition and should framed and up in every producer’s office. We love the tagline on the poster: “They Charge and Arm and a Leg.” We’ll try not to.

VERTIGO (1958) 17868

full.vertigo 1sh signed big file 17868

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock mystery thriller masterpiece, VERTIGO (1958) starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. This Hitchcock classic tells the story of a former San Francisco detective (Stewart) suffering from acrophobia who investigates the strange activities of an old friend’s wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. Hitchcock creates some of his most hypnotic scenes in this film as well as a general sense of unease and dread– even in seemingly banal situations. Bernard Herrmann’s excellent score is a perfect compliment to this complex and suspenseful story. The score is perhaps more important here than it most films, because much of the story is told simply with Stewart’s and Novak’s facial expressions and the music. Stewart gives one of the best performances of his career, and Novak is completely convincing in her dual roles. With artwork by the great Saul Bass, this original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine plus condition. This one sheet is signed by James Stewart. We have never seen another copy of this one sheet signed by Stewart.

PSYCHO (1960) 16345

Original Paramount Pictures 1965 Re-Release One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock horror-thriller masterpiece, PSYCHO (1960)—starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, and John Gavin. Considered by many critics to be the best horror movie of all time, this film was superlative in every way. Starting with one of the best screenplays by Joseph Stefano based on the novel by Robert Bloch– the acting is perfect, the cinematography of John L. Russell is beautiful, and the soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann is exceptional. However, the outstanding direction by Hitchcock is the crowning touch of this great film. The handling of every nuance—gestures, glances, and sudden changes in lighting—is masterful. This film was the first true “psychological thriller.” Though we have become jaded with legions of realistic gore since this movie was released, seeing a nude woman murdered in the shower was something no one had experienced yet in 1960. The 1965 re-release poster incorporates some of the design of the original one sheet and may in fact be rarer than the original. Folded. Very fine condition.

FRENZY (1972) 8777

full.frenzy-1sh-8777

Original Universal Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Alfred Hitchcock crime thriller, FRENZY (1972)—starring Jon Finch, Barry Foster, and Barbara Leigh-Hunt. This is Hitchcock’s next to last film, and many critics rank it among his best. The story revolves around a serial killer who is savagely raping London women and then strangling them with a necktie. Scripted with ghoulish humor by Anthony Schaffer, it is the first Hitchcock film with nude scenes. Indeed, Hitchcock presents a sequence that many believe equals the notorious “shower scene” in PSYCHO (1960)—a horrific rape and slow strangulation that leaves the viewer simply stunned. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very good condition. There is an interior tear which is almost invisible but should not be allowed to enlarge. Linen backing is recommended for this poster. Ask us about linen backing services. We have priced the poster accordingly.
