Original Universal Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Arthur Cohen music short documentary, PETE’S PLACE (ca. 1960). Pierre Dewey LaFontaine, Jr., born July 3, 1930 is one of the greatest clarinet players in American Jazz. Better known as Pete Fountain, he grew up in New Orleans where he was heavily influenced by Benny Goodman and of course the wellspring of American jazz and Dixieland that infused one of the greatest musical cities in the world. Fountain formed the Basin Street Six in 1950 and throughout that decade worked in many jazz bands culminating in a multi-year stint in The Lawrence Welk Orchestra as a clarinet soloist. A minor dust up resulted when Welk, one of the most enduring of the Big Band leaders, fired Fountain for jazzing up a Christmas song on Welk’s weekly ABC Television show. The 1960s was a time when Fountain’s music became extremely popular in America. It was the era of pop instrumental soloists like Al Hirt, Bert Kampfert, Acker Bilk, and Herb Alpert. Fountain still performs at age 80. The one sheet for this New Orleans jazz music documentary short subject shows Fountain outside his famous club at 808 Bourbon Street. This original one sheet poster is folded, theater used, and in fine plus condition—with only some minor rumpling. A rare poster, this is a perfect candidate for linen backing.
