
Original New Yorker Films One Sheet Poster (27×41) for SHOAH (1985), Claude Lanzmann’s remarkable documentary film of survivor recollections of The Holocaust. Shoah is the Hebrew word which describes the genocide directed against the Jewish People in Europe during World War II. Lanzmann, a French filmmaker, made this nine hour film of interviews with survivors, and it is generally considered to me the definitive Holocaust documentary film. In SHOAH, one sees few feet of the documentary footage shot of the camps, but rather the camera brings the viewer up close to people who lived through the unspeakable. It was also through Shoah that many viewers were first introduced to the work of American Holocaust historian Raul Hilberg. Lanzmann has disagreed, sometimes angrily, with attempts to understand the why of Hitler, stating that the evil of Hitler cannot or should not be explained and that to do so is immoral and an obscenity. Lanzmann is chief editor of the journal Les Temps Modernes, which was founded by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. In 2009, Lanzmann published his memoirs under the title “Le lievre de Patagonie” (The Patagonian Hare).” The American one sheet poster for this important documentary is actually scarce, due to the relatively small U.S. distribution. This slightly irregularly folded copy is in very fine plus condition.
