DOWN AMONG THE SHELTERING PALMS (1951) 5445

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original 20th Century Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Edmund Goulding light-hearted musical comedy, DOWN AMONG THE SHELTERING PALMS (1951) starring William Lundigan, Jane Greer, Mitzi Gaynor, David Wayne, and Gloria DeHaven. The story begins after the end of World War II, when Capt. Willoby (Lundigan) and his men must “occupy” the remote Midi Island. At first disgusted at not being able to go home, the men then meet the “friendly” island women—except they are not supposed to “fraternize” with them. Originally filmed in 1951, the film was held back by Fox until 1953 and seems to have been based on the studio trying to cash in on the popular stage success of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific.” Gaynor is amusingly miscast as a native Polynesian girl. Gloria DeHaven, however, sings a rendition of “All of Me” that steams up the screen as much as anything Marilyn Monroe ever did. Good condition only with a fold separation which we have repaired with archival tissue. Other general signs of use. We recommend linen backing for this poster. Priced accordingly.

Original Swedish poster (27×39) for the Edmund Goulding drama, THE TRESPASSER (1929) starring Gloria Swanson and Robert Ames. Swanson originally hired writer/director Goulding to help her complete QUEEN KELLY, the unfinished silent epic she had started with Erich von Stroheim. After spending months editing Stroheim’s footage, Goulding persuaded Swanson to make THE TRESPASSER instead. He wrote the script in three weeks, the movie was in the theaters by the end of the year, and Swanson was able to recoup enough money to pay off the investors of QUEEN KELLY. This film was Swanson’s talkie debut and became a huge critical success and box office hit. Swanson was nominated for her second Best Actress Oscar. This beautiful Swedish stone lithograph is linen-backed and in very fine to near mint condition.

TEENAGE REBEL (1956) 7648

Original 20th Century-Fox Half Sheet Poster (22×28) for the Edmund Goulding teen drama, TEENAGE REBEL (1956) starring Ginger Rogers, Michael Rennie, and Betty Lou Keim. Dodie (Keim), the fifteen-year-old daughter of Rogers (in one of her last feature films), is not so much a rebel as the sad child of a divorce. She has been estranged from her mother for eight years since her parents’ divorce. But when she is finally sent to her mother so her father can secretly get married, she must learn to accept her mother and new stepfather. In all, the film is an excellent attempt to dramatize the effects of divorce on a child at a time when divorce was still unusual. This original half sheet poster is in very fine condition.
