THE ARRANGEMENT (1969) 1136

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster (27×41) for the Elia Kazan relationship drama, THE ARRANGEMENT (1969) starring Kirk Douglas, Deborah Kerr, Faye Dunaway, Richard Boone, Hume Cronyn and Michael Murphy. Douglas portrays a man forced to come to terms with the shallowness of his life after a serious car accident. His wife represents everything he despises about what he has become. Faye Dunaway, stunningly beautiful as his young and brutally honest lover, helps him see the misery of his existence. The poster design features an image of a man (clearly Douglas) whose octopus-like tentacles control everything and everyone. This original Polish poster is in very fine condition.

BABY DOLL (1957) 8473

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers Window Card poster (14×22) for Elia Kazan’s film, BABY DOLL (1956) starring Karl Malden, Carroll Baker, Eli Wallach, and Mildred Dunnock. With a screenplay by Tennessee Williams, this film is the steamy tale of two cotton gin rivals in Mississippi in the 1950s and a sensuous 19-year-old virgin who has a penchant for sucking her thumb and sleeping in a crib. The Brothers Warner took a huge gamble on this outrageous and suggestive storyline, which Cardinal Spellman of New York denounced and Time Magazine called “possibly the dirtiest American-made motion picture that has ever been legally exhibited.” The film was both a hit at the box office and with the movie critics. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Baker, Best Supporting Actress for Dunnock, Best Cinematography for Boris Kaufman, and Best Screenplay for Williams. It won the Golden Globe Best Picture award and was nominated for Golden Globes in four other categories. This poster is in very good condition. It has a snipe which was from The Melrose Theater. This snipe is easily removed by a competent poster conservator.

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for Elia Kazan’s dramatic masterpiece, EAST OF EDEN (1955) starring Julie Harris, James Dean, Raymond Massey, Richard Davalos, and Jo Van Fleet. This was James Dean’s screen debut as the neurotic and troubled twin son of the Bible-reading lettuce farmer Massey. His performance was so riveting that he was nominated for Best Actor, the first posthumous acting nomination in Academy Award history as Dean had been killed in an automobile accident in September 1955 at the age of twenty-four. Other Academy nominations included Best Director for Kazan and Best Screenplay for Paul Osborn’s adaptation of the popular John Steinbeck novel. Jo Van Fleet was nominated for and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as the mother of the twin brothers and a successful but embittered brothel madam in Monterey. Originally folded, this one sheet poster is in very fine minus condition with only some minor foxing and a snipe on the right side.

GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT (1947) 9417H

full.gentlemansagreement-sc8-9417h

Original 20th Century-Fox Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Elia Kazan anti-Semitism drama, GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT (1947) starring Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, John Garfield, and Celeste Holm. In this excellent screenplay by Moss Hart, a reporter (Peck) pretends to be Jewish in order to cover a story about anti-Semitism, and in the process he personally discovers the true depths of bigotry and hatred. Very few films confront bigotry as intelligently as this one, because it confronts the unspoken, insensitive attitudes of the many rather than the violent and outrageous acts of a few. A “gentleman’s agreement” is made without writing or even speech and refers to the many bigots who unthinkingly assume their prejudices are universally accepted. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director to Kazan, and Best Supporting Actress to Holm. We have graded this card in fine plus condition for pinholes; otherwise, very fine.
