THE WOMEN (1939) 19867

full.The Women

Original MGM Three Sheet Poster (41.25×78) for the George Cukor dramatic comedy, THE WOMEN (1939) starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. Anita Loos adapted the screenplay from the popular Broadway play by Clare Booth Luce. The play opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on September 7, 1937 and played for 666 performances. The story revolves around wealthy Mary Haines (Shearer), who is totally unaware that her husband is having an affair with shop girl Crystal Allen (Crawford). There are over 130 roles in the movie, all played by women. Furthermore, all of the animals used (dogs and horses) were also female. Within two years of the release of this film, Shearer would retire permanently from the screen; within four years, Crawford would leave MGM at Louis B. Mayer’s “request.” MovieArt has received this poster back from the conservation firm where it was linen backed and restored and the result is spectacular. Very rare in this format. We know of only one occasion on which this style three sheet ever appeared in an auction. A spectacular image of Crawford — and two other major MGM stars, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell. The photo was taken before the rebacking. We will post the new photo soon.

Original Selznick-MGM 1968 One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the David O. Selznick Civil War masterpiece, GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)—starring Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, and Leslie Howard. 1940 posters for GWTW are considered original posters. Though the film was initially shown in 1939, exhibition continued through 1940 and in some cases into 1941. There are several styles of one sheets for GONE WITH THE WIND. This style, the so-called “kissing” style, is the best style to evoke the romantic aspects of the movie. Based on the epic novel of the old south by Margaret Mitchell, this film is certainly one of the greatest films ever made, bringing together the best talent in Hollywood at the time. Not only are all the performances outstanding, the scenery and costumes are sumptuous, the cinematography by Ernest Haller and Ray Rennahan (shot entirely in Technicolor) is glorious, and the musical score by Max Steiner is one of the most famous in the cinema. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Actress to Leigh, Best Director to Fleming, and Best Cinematography. Folded. Small chip out of the upper right border area. Fine plus condition. This poster is printed on the matte paper that is characteristic of the first edition of this poster. The poster does carry some fine print that date the poster as 1970. We count this as a 1968 poster. The film was released in a widescreen 70mm version that was accomplished by cropping the normal 4×3 frame to accommodate wide format. 35mm release prints in this wide version were shown after the 70mm run. We ascribe this poster to that release. This is a premium version of the poster with the Howard Terpning art.

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940) 16413 1955R

full.thephiladelphiastory-22x28-16413

Original MGM 1955 Re-Release Half Sheet Poster (22×28) for the George Cukor classic romantic comedy, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940)—starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, and Ruth Hussey. Katherine Hepburn had been famously labeled “box office poison” by the exhibitors after several of her films in the late thirties had turned out huge flops. But the right property, the right cast and the right director combined to make THE PHILADELPHIA STORY her “comeback” vehicle. Not that she had ever really gone away. THE PHILADELPHIA STORY had been a popular play on Broadway, and Hepburn was prescient enough to buy the film rights for herself. It actually plays more like a film from the previous decade than the forties — witty, elegant, democratic, disdainful of pomposity. This re-release half sheet from 1955 needs some small amount of work, but is available for a fraction of the price of any 1940 poster. And the graphic is great with good images of the three main players. The poster is folded. Good plus condition. Has some marker on the reverse side which has bled lightly to the front. This can be fixed. We recommend paper-backing for this poster. MovieArt can help you with suggestions for restoration.
