full.thesearchers-1sh-21217

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the John Ford iconic western adventure, THE SEARCHERS (1956) starring John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond, and Natalie Wood. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this film as the 12th Greatest Movie of All Time, and in 2008 the AFI ranked the film as the number one greatest western. John Wayne gave the most winning and memorable performance of his career, and the film is reputed to have been his most favorite role. While the film is driven by racist hatred of Native Americans, both races are portrayed as ruthless and barbaric. The film was shot in Utah’s magnificent Monument Valley, and the Technicolor cinematography is simply stunning. Also, the score by Max Steiner is exceptional, and without it the impact of the film would be considerably diminished. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet poster for the John Ford iconic drama, THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, and John Carradine. This film is the story of the Joad family, who are forced to leave their land in Oklahoma because of drought and poverty. The characters are exquisitely brought to life from the pages of the John Steinbeck novel. Stunning black and white cinematography by Gregg Toland enhances the overwhelming feeling of desperation and emptiness that suffuses the entire film. When the Joads decide to abandon the dustbowl of Oklahoma and go to California to get jobs they’ve only heard about, they encounter every hardship imaginable along the way. And when they do finally arrive, they are forced to live in shantytowns and work for wages that barely prevent starvation. With incredibly powerful performances from the entire cast, this film remains a shockingly realistic yet poetic portrayal of the sufferings so many families experienced in the Great Depression. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. John Ford won the Oscar for Best Director and Jane Darwell deservedly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her unforgettable performance as Ma Joad. This spectacularly memorable cast is shown together in front of the art work by Thomas Hart Benton which was used for the campaign. This original one sheet is a top-tier example. THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) 5564

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster – an odd size, 11×32, for the John Ford western film THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin. This is perhaps the last great John Ford western. The essential subject of the film is the truth of the American West as opposed to the Legend of it. Sadistic hoodlum Liberty Valence, played wonderfully by Lee Marvin, menaces a territorial town in the days before statehood. James Stewart is a young lawyer who comes to the west to settle down and bring his lawyerly ways with him. John Wayne is a rough-hewn rancher steeped in the values of the old west. Which one of these men end the career of Liberty Valence with a bullet? This is the question on which the film pivots. Vera Miles is the woman who loves them both. This is one of the really unusual and beautiful John Wayne posters. Very Fine. Art by Leszek Holdanowicz.

full.fortapache-belgian

FORT APACHE stands apart from many westerns of the late 40s and 50s as a far more thoughtful and fair interpretation of US/Indian relations in the mid-19th century, and is considered one of Ford’s masterpieces. Wayne plays Capt. York, a veteran Civil War commander assigned to take charge of a remote outpost in Arizona. He arrives to find acting commander Lt. Col. Thursday (Henry Fonda) undermining the local Apache leaders and turning a blind eye to the government liaison’s corruption. As York and Thursday butt heads over whether to treat the natives with respect or force them to submit, the Apache leader Cochise (Miguel Inclan) organizes an uprising that slaughters most of the cavalrymen a la Little Bighorn. One of 24 John Ford films starring John Wayne, FORT APACHE also features Ward Bond, John Agar, and a 19-year old Shirley Temple.

SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949) 20359

full.sheworeayellowribbon-belgian-20359

Original Belgian Poster (14×22) for the John Ford western, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949) starring John Wayne, Joanne Dru, John Agar, and Ben Johnson. This is the most enduring and appealing of the John Wayne / John Ford “cavalry” trilogy. It is the sentimental tale of a crusty but endearing career soldier (Wayne) facing retirement in a world where the cavalry stands as the only defense against the combined might of the Indian nations. Wayne’s performance embodies the subtlety and sensitivity that many claimed was beyond the actor’s capability. How wrong they were. The film has often been compared to Frederic Remington’s classic paintings of the west in general and of cavalrymen and Indians in particular. This original Belgian poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.
