William Goldman wrote the screenplay for this popular film about a runner, Babe Levy, who gets ensnarled with an ex-Nazi, played by Olivier, who has come to New York to collect some ill-gotten diamonds belonging to Holocaust victims. Suspense is the film’s stock-in-trade, but there is some great chewing of the scenery by Hoffman, Olivier and Roy Schneider. John Schlesinger is the director, made at the height of his powers.
