This film tells the story of British major Jack Celliers (Bowie) who comes to a Japanese P.O.W. camp in 1942. The film shows most poignantly the physical and mental abuse the prisoners had to live with day in and day out. The eponymous Mr. Lawrence (Conti) has a most difficult time trying to reconcile his respect for Japanese culture with the total barbarity of the camp.
