Original 20th Century-Fox Roadshow One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Robert Wise musical masterpiece, THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) starring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, and Richard Haydn. Julie Andrews is believable and unforgettable as the nun who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess of the family of a naval officer widower. Great songs and music, interesting characters, superb direction, and an inspired screenplay all combine to make this one of the American Cinema’s best loved and just plain great musicals. And while some people complain that the tone is too sweet, certainly the final act with the introduction of the Nazis adds a new sense of fear and drama. The audience loves the fact that the Von Trapp family is able to outwit history’s ultimate villains. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Actress for Andrews, the film won five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director to Wise. HELEN OF TROY (1956) 6717

Original Warner Brothers 1959 Re-Release Duotone Insert Poster (14×36) for the Robert Wise ancient Greek epic, HELEN OF TROY (1956)–starring Rossana Podesta, Jacques Sernas, Niall MacGinnis, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Warner’s version of the tale of Homer’s Iliad spins the story so that the Trojans are the heroic peace loving people trapped in a war with the bellicose Greeks. Podesta was new to American films, and Warners had high hopes for her, but her English was so broken that they elected to have her voice – and the voice of Sernas – dubbed. The re-release insert is curious because the poster makes no mention at all of leading man Sernas. Condition is very fine. MovieArt also has posters for the original 1956 release of this film including two rare 30x40s! If you watch this film, look for a small role by a very young Brigitte Bardot!

Original MGM Pressbook (12×17) for the Robert Wise horror classic, THE HAUNTING (1963) starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson. This film is one of the more fondly remembered horror films of the 1960s and certainly one of the best to emerge from MGM, a studio not generally associated with the genre. One of the great virtues of the film is the deft direction by Robert Wise. But the film has a great cast headed up by Julie Harris and Claire Bloom, two wonderful actresses. Among ghost stories, THE HAUNTING is still one of the best. The film was based on a novel by Shirley Jackson. This original 12-page pressbook is in very fine condition; there are no excisions from the book.
