“Tell them I’ll do it for a million dollars.”  That was the off-the-cuff remark the Elizabeth Taylor made to Eddie Fisher when producer Walter Wanger or perhaps his assistant called to ask if Taylor would star in CLEOPATRA.  She said it thinking certainly that anyone in their right mind would turn her down.  That was almost half a century ago.  The celebrity scandal that would ensue and the publicity it generated was quite simply publicity that money could not buy.  It is difficult to understand in today’s overexposed world of 60-minute celebrities (they get 45 minutes more that Warhol would allow) the kind of white-hot attention that the production of this film would generate.  The paparazzi were really born in the circus that was the production of what was – up to that time – the most expensive movie ever made.  Oddly, or perhaps not, the movie was a box office disappointment when it was released.  But Taylor’s career would go on as the stuff of legend.  As an actress and a humanitarian.  We are already missing her.
