PAL JOEY (1957) 14000

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures one sheet poster for the George Sidney musical PAL JOEY (1957) starring Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra, and Kim Novak. The film is based on the classic Rodgers and Hart musical of the same name and features such ageless songs as BEWITCHED, BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED and MY FUNNY VALENTINE. Sinatra is at the top of his game portraying a San Francisco roue torn between two women — a high society matron and a showgirl. Celluloid life and reel life mirrored one another as Columbia Boss Harry Cohn’s real-life obsession between the two studio glamour girls played out on screen, pitting one against the other. This theater used poster is in very good condition. It is somewhat worn – with some small tears, some pinholes and other distresses. This poster is a good candidate for linen backing. FUNNY LADY (1975) 19084

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Columbia Pictures 30 x 40 Poster for the Herbert Ross musical FUNNY LADY (1975) starring Barbra Streisand, James Caan, Omar Sharif, Roddy McDowell and Ben Vereen. This musical biopic continued to explore the life of 1930s-era comedienne/singer Fanny Brice after her divorce from gambler Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif) and her later involvement with impresario Billy Rose. FUNNY LADY was a glamorous big budget production that attempted to capitalize on Streisand’s success in the original FUNNY GIRL — a project she carried triumphantly from the Broadway stage to the Academy Awards. Teaming her with James Caan, then riding the stardom train after his mega success with THE GODFATHER and several other projects, seemed like a no brainer. The results were a mixed bag but entertaining nonetheless and with a solidly memorable score. The poster is in very fine, unfolded condition.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for Alfred E. Green’s biography THE EDDIE CANTOR STORY (1953) starring Keefe Brasselle, Marilyn Erskine, Marie Windsor and Aline MacMahon. This was one of a series of biographies that were popular in the late 1940s and early 1950s on the likes of show business phenomenons like Al Jolson and Will Rodgers. These were often highly white-washed films that contained a nostalgic and sentimental tone chiefly celebrating the music and comedy of acclaimed performers of the past. In this one, the audiences is reminded of such Cantor classics as “Ida, Sweet as Apple Cider” and “If You Knew Susie.” This poster for THE EDDIE CANTOR STORY is folded and in very fine condition.

CABARET (1972) 7242

full-cabaret reissue 40x60

This is an original Allied Artists 1974 Reissued 40×60 Poster for the Bob Fosse classic musical romance, CABARET (1972) starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, and Joel Grey. Based on the Christopher Isherwood story, “A Goodbye to Berlin,” this film tells the story of American entertainer Sally Bowles who comes to decadent Berlin of the early 1930s and goes to work at The Kit-Kat Club. She is the same kind of character as Marlene Dietrich’s famous archetype in “The Blue Angel”—a seemingly heartless vamp who drives men crazy and then throws them away like toys. The film works wonderfully on a historical level, on a personal story level, as well as on a purely entertainment level. Fosse recreates in living detail the grotesque sleaze of Berlin’s lowlife during the rise of Nazism. Nominated for ten Academy Awards including Best Picture, it won eight Oscars including Best Director to Fosse, Best Actress to Minnelli, and Best Supporting Actor to Grey. This original reissued 40×60 poster is in very fine condition.

Rogers plays fashion magazine editor Liza, who finds herself having headaches and feeling generally dissatisfied. Finally going to a psychiatrist in desperation, she recalls her dreams where she bursts into lavish musical numbers, which feature her as the epitome of musical glamour. Indeed, Vincente Minnelli and Judy Garland named their daughter Liza Minnelli after this part. This original scene card is in very fine condition. As a rule, Paramount Pictures did not issue a title lobby card with their lobby card sets. This is one of the very few exceptions to that policy at Paramount!
