Though the plot is thin, the musical and dance numbers, especially by Calloway and his amazing band, are quite wonderful. Calloway and his band show why they were first-class musicians and first-class entertainers. Also featured are Dusty Fletcher, Lois, the Peters Sisters, and the Miller Brothers. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine plus condition– with only some minor touch-ups and minimal restorations.

full.theprisonerofswing-1sh-18993

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Roy Mack musical comedy short, THE PRISONER OF SWING (1938) starring Hal Le Roy and June Allyson. This delightful musical satire is based on Anthony Hope’s novel, “The Prisoner of Zenda,” in which a commoner takes the place of a look-alike king. In this version, the King of Sulvania is going to outlaw swing music upon his coronation. So, the king is kidnapped by swing lovers and replaced with his look-alike cousin. Hal Le Roy, saxophonist and tap dancer extraordinaire, is wonderful in the duel role of king and cousin. And June Allyson, only in the second year of her film career, is delightful as the princess. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition.

FOOTLOOSE (1984) 1283

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet poster from the Herbert Ross film FOOTLOOSE (1984). Without this film there may never have been the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game. Herbert Ross directed this very (at the time) popular film about an irrepressible young boy who moves to a very square town. Hurrah for the Culture Wars! The film was remade in 2011. Kevin is shown on the poster – dancing with his Walkman. Needless to say Kevin Bacon went on to a very successful career. Poster is folded and in near mint condition.

LETS ROCK (1958) 2471

full.letsrock lcset -2471

Original Columbia Pictures Complete Lobby Card Set (11×14) for the Harry Foster music drama, LET’S ROCK (1958) starring Julius LaRosa, Phyllis Newman, Conrad Janis, Joy Harmon, and Paul Anka. This swinging little picture stars Julius LaRosa as a young crooner who resists the rock and roll trend until his girlfriend (Phyllis Newman) convinces him to accept and integrate it—and yes it is dated. The rockers in the movie are not the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, or Little Richard, but Paul Anka, Danny and the Juniors, and Wink Martindale. By today’s standards the level and quality of “rocking” that occurs in this movie is debatable, but LET’S ROCK remains a peppy, good spirited film about going with the flow. Fine condition, mostly smudged. Could use cleaning. Theater-used.

full-mygalsal-1sh-19860

This is an original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Irving Cummings musical biography, MY GAL SAL (1942) starring Rita Hayworth and Victor Mature. This film chronicles the early life of gay nineties-era songwriter Paul Dresser (Mature) and his love-hate relationship to popular songstress Sally Elliott (Hayworth). Even though the plot is silly, Fox gave this film the full Technicolor treatment and the songs and dance are beautifully filmed. The poster has become one of the better Hayworth film posters. This original one sheet poster is in very fine condition. Linen backed.

One of the oddest posters in our inventory, this poster is for a documentary short made by Universal in the mid-sixties (probably). The film seems to be about bellydancing discos in Turkey. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL REVUE (1955) 7529

fullrocknrollrevue C1s 7529-2

Original Studio Films One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Joseph Kohn African-American musical extravaganza, ROCK ‘N’ ROLL REVUE (1955). Although you were supposed to think that this was a live concert at the vintage Apollo Theater; in fact, this film was a compilation of short music films performed at different times. Only The Clovers and Big Joe Turner are really rock and roll, the rest of the performers are rhythm and blues, jazz, and tap dancing stars mixed with comedy performances. Even The Clovers, who had more R&B charting hits than any other vocal group at the time, were only marginally in the rock and roll category. But the film did have great performances by Duke Ellington and his fabulous drummer Louis Bellson. Other notable greats in the film are Larry Darnell (know at the time as “Mr. Heart & Soul), Nat “King” Cole, Lionel Hampton, and Dinah Washington. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in near mint condition.

THE BELLE OF NEW YORK (1952) 9572

full.belleofny 1s 9572

Original MGM One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Charles Walters musical comedy, THE BELLE OF NEW YORK starring Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen. The film was a remake of a 1919 silent film of the same name starring Marion Davies. Both films were based on the first American stage musical to play London’s West End, where it was a big hit in 1897. Originally, the film was to be made with Astaire and Judy Garland, but the two stars could never get their overlapping schedules to allow them to work together. So, the female lead was given to Vera-Ellen. She is a seductive, charming, and talented dancer, and her fun solo “Naughty But Nice” is a delight to watch. Her physical style of dancing is a nice complement to Astaire’s smooth elegance. Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer wrote the musical numbers, and Astaire’s “I Wanna Be a Dancin’ Man” is certainly one of his most memorable performances. This original one sheet poster is linen-backed and in very fine condition. The linen lip has been trimmed up to the poster. There are some minor distresses to the top border, and the fold lines are left untouched. There is no missing paper, and the colors are bright.
