GIMME SHELTER (1971)

full.gimmeshelter-premiere-1sh-21498

Original Maysles Brothers Productions, Inc. premiere poster (25×35) for the Albert and David Maysles rock concert documentary, GIMME SHELTER (1971) starring the Rolling Stones, the Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. This film is a documentary of the 1969 Rolling Stones Tour, with much of the focus on the tragic concert at Altamont Speedway in December of 1969—only four months after the iconic Woodstock Festival. About 300,000 people came to the concert, and the organizers put the Hell’s Angels in charge of security.  The Angels spent most of their time beating up spectators and killing at least one.  This event was construed by the media to herald the end of halcyon hippie days of rock.   This original poster was created by the Maysles Brothers for the New York City Premiere at the Plaza Theater.  The poster is unusual not only because the premiere poster is very rare, but also because of the anachronistic photo of the Stones circa 1965 – four years before the fateful venue at Altamont.  GIMME SHELTER was subsequently distributed by 20th Century Fox, but this poster is not a Fox one sheet.

The documentary features his trip to West Africa, which he immediately adopted as his ancestral home because of how much he liked the people there. Originally folded, this half sheet poster is in fine condition.

THE ENDLESS SUMMER (1966) 20865

The smaller counter-standee posters for this 1966 surfing classic have been seen in the last several years, but the full one sheet size is now definitely scarce. Wonderful day-glo ink art by John Van Hamersveld. THE ENDLESS SUMMER began its trek to feature film status as a series of homemade but rather excellently filmed surfing travelogues, presented in high school and civic auditoria throughout California, created by the inveterate surfer Bruce Brown. These individual films were fashioned into a 95 minute theatrical film released by Cinema V. In this movie the surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August criss-crossed the world in search of the most seductive wave they could find. Engaging homespun narration, laced with the sixties most bitchin’ surfing lingo and guitar, and spot-on colorful (16mm!) cinematography attracted audiences all over the world. The film has been often imitated – it spawned its own sequel, THE ENDLESS SUMMER 2 (1994) and most recently the hi-def technically dazzling STEP INTO LIQUID (2003). And the Australians made a bunch of surfing features of their own. Ask about our collection of those! But for sheer charm, nothing can top THE ENDLESS SUMMER. Very fine plus, folded.

THE JAMES DEAN STORY (1957) 2470

Original Warner Bros. Scene Lobby Card (11×14) for the Robert Altman and George W. George documentary, THE JAMES DEAN STORY (1957) narrated by Martin Gabel. Made shortly after his untimely death, the film makes use of still photographs with narration and interviews, including Dean’s aunt and uncle who raised him after his mother died when the boy was nine years old. Here his “rebel” side is seen more as an expression of loneliness and search for acceptance. The Warner’s produced documentary was early to lionize Dean, and the project was put in the hands of the young Robert Altman. This beautiful scene card of Dean with his nephew exemplifies what we mean. The photographer is Roy Schatt. Condition is very fine.

WOODSTOCK (1970) 19378

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Michael Wadleigh iconic rock documentary, WOODSTOCK (1970). Considered by many critics to be the best music documentary of all time, others consider it to be one of the very best documentaries ever filmed on any subject. It is a very intimate look at the Woodstock Music and Art Festival held in Bethel, New York in 1969 and in a broader sense a record of the 1960′s “hippy” culture or, as they were often called, the “counterculture.” Peace, love, and music were the themes of the day, and many of the performances are nothing short of amazing. Jimi Hendrix (complete with his frenzied version of “The Star Spangled Banner”), Country Joe and the Fish, Joan Baez, The Who, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash are just some of the legendary performers immortalized in this film. It deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary, as well as being nominated for Best Editing and Best Sound. This original one sheet poster is an unbacked folded one sheet in very fine plus condition. Great color. No missing paper.
