OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Belgian Poster (Trimmed 13×17) for the Carmine Gallone historical drama, MESSALINA (1951) starring Maria Felix, Georges Marchal, Memo Benassi, and Delia Scala. This original Italian production was known in the U.S. as THE AFFAIRS OF MESSALINA and tells the story of the most notorious woman in Roman history. Felix presents a memorable portrayal of this complex ancient woman who comes to an ignominious end through her excesses and folly. The original Belgian poster presents a stunning portrait of the Mexican superstar. Although the poster is trimmed at the top with some of the playmate information still visible, it is still in very good condition. This poster would certainly be a good candidate for restoration. Ask us about it.

Original MGM Re-Release of 1974 One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Victor Fleming Civil War masterpiece, GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) starring Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, and Leslie Howard. Based on the epic novel by Margaret Mitchell, this film is certainly one of the greatest films ever made, bringing together the best talent in Hollywood at the time. Not only are all the performances outstanding, the scenery and costumes are sumptuous, the cinematography by Ernest Haller and Ray Rennahan (shot entirely in Technicolor) is glorious, and the music of Max Steiner is memorable. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards—including Best Picture, Best Actress to Leigh, Best Director to Fleming, and Best Cinematography. This original re-release one sheet poster (marked 1974 but printed in 1968 because of the paper stock used) is folded and in very fine condition.

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet Poster (27×41) for Sergio Leone’s brilliant and epic film about growing up to be a gangster in lower Manhattan at the turn of the century, ONE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (1984) starring Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, and Joe Pesci. One of the great performances of Robert De Niro, the film was restored to its intended length in the DVD release after Warners cut the film to essential incoherence at its original release in 1984. The picture is almost breathtaking in scope, as it ranges in time over almost sixty years. The score by Italian master Ennio Morricone remains one of the greatest film scores of all time. Based on the novel THE HOODS by Harry Grey. This folded one sheet is in very fine condition.

RAINTREE COUNTY (1956) 21310 THREE PHOTOGRAPHS

full.raintreecountry-three stills-21310

Original studio issued oversized photographs from Edward Dmytryk romantic drama, RAINTREE COUNTY (1957) starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Marie Saint, Nigel Patrick, and Lee Marvin. When this film was in rehearsals, Clift’s notorious drinking problem got completely out of hand. When the film was half finished, Clift left a party given by Taylor and her husband Michael Wilding and crashed his car into a telephone pole, horribly disfiguring his face. Production on the film was shut down for weeks, but the film was finally completed and received four Academy Award nominations, including Taylor’s first nomination for Best Actress. There are three stills in the package. Two of the stills are of publicity paintings done for the film. The third still if of what we believe to be the 24 sheet poster. But the catch here is the portrait of Montgomery Clift. This still is in very fine shape. The 24 sheet still is a bit ragged and the still of Clift and Eva Marie Sainte was trimmed on one side, probably to accomodate the display. These are theater used stills which we acquired from a 70mm cinema that played the film originally.

GENGHIS KHAN (1963) 4969

full.genghiskhan-front of house-4969

Original Set of 8 British Front of House Cards (8×10) for the Harry Levin historical epic, GENGHIS KHAN (1965) starring Stephen Boyd, Omar Sharif, James Mason, and Telly Savalas. Although many critics have complained that his film is nothing more than a shallow adventure story, others have praise for the locations, cinematography, sets, and costumes. It does seem that Levin forgot that the film is about Mongolians, since the only characters of Asian descent in the film are the extras. Some people found Dusan Radic’s score to be little more than ‘pseudo-epic orchestrations with grandiose flourishes,” while others found the score “fantastic” and achieving “Rosza-like standards.” This set of original British front of house cards are in fine plus condition.

SPARTACUS (1960) 4944

full.spartacus-UK-front of house set-4944

Original British Front of House set for the Stanley Kubrick Roman epic, SPARTACUS (1960) starring Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, John Gavin, Tony Curtis, Charles Laughton, and Peter Ustinov. Stanley Kubrick replaced original director Anthony Mann, but it was really Kirk Douglas as Executive Producer who made many of the decisions. The film is a marvelous retelling of the revolt in 73 B.C. at a gladiatorial school, which mushrooms into a crisis for the Roman Empire. Opposing political factions by Olivier and Laughton try to use the revolt to further their political ends. Besides outstanding performances from the entire cast and expert direction by Kubrick, the film has beautiful cinematography by Russell Metty and a brilliant score by Alex North. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won five Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor to Ustinov and Best Cinematography to Metty. These front-of-house cards served as the British equivalent of lobby cards. A full front of house set is rare.
Condition is very fine.
