THE CHILDREN’S HOUR (1962) 17058

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This Belgian original poster is for the William Wyler film THE CHILDREN’S HOUR starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and James Garner. The original source material was a play by the great Lillian Hellman. It had been made into a film in the 1936 as THESE THREE but the homosexual subject matter had been too hot for the censors at that time, and so the sexual triangle had been heterosexual. But Wyler, who had directed the 1936 film, wanted to film the play as it had been intended, and the less restricted atmosphere of the early sixties made that possible. Still the film is somewhat restrained by today’s standards. Miriam Hopkins who had played one of the women in the 1936 film appeared again in 1962 in the role of another character. The poster is unfolded and is in very fine condition. There is a small tear at the top border which has been repaired with archival tissue. The name of the Belgian cinema, Acropole, is printed in the playdate area.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original 20th Century-Fox One Sheet poster for the John Ford iconic drama, THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) starring Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, and John Carradine. This film is the story of the Joad family, who are forced to leave their land in Oklahoma because of drought and poverty. The characters are exquisitely brought to life from the pages of the John Steinbeck novel. Stunning black and white cinematography by Gregg Toland enhances the overwhelming feeling of desperation and emptiness that suffuses the entire film. When the Joads decide to abandon the dustbowl of Oklahoma and go to California to get jobs they’ve only heard about, they encounter every hardship imaginable along the way. And when they do finally arrive, they are forced to live in shantytowns and work for wages that barely prevent starvation. With incredibly powerful performances from the entire cast, this film remains a shockingly realistic yet poetic portrayal of the sufferings so many families experienced in the Great Depression. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. John Ford won the Oscar for Best Director and Jane Darwell deservedly won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her unforgettable performance as Ma Joad. This spectacularly memorable cast is shown together in front of the art work by Thomas Hart Benton which was used for the campaign. This original one sheet is a top-tier example. We have graded it Very Fine Plus. Very minor
touch up at the folds and expertly linen-backed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Warner Brothers One Sheet poster for Mike Nichols important American film, WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (1966) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, and Sandy Dennis. This cinematic masterpiece is based on a play by Edward Albee, which won both the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. The play was remarkably adapted for the screen by Ernest Lehman. It is the story of one horrendous night in the lives a very bitter, aging couple (Taylor and Burton), who with the help of limitless quantities of alcohol use the visit of a younger couple (Dennis and Segal) to fuel anguish and emotional torture towards each other. Indeed, the audience is as exhausted as the characters by the end of this ordeal. The film won five Academy Awards– including Best Actress for Taylor, Best Supporting Actress for Dennis, and Best Cinematography for Haskell Wexler. The film was also nominated for eight more awards—including Best Actor for Burton, Best Supporting Actor for Segal, Best Director for Nichols (in his directorial debut), Best Score for Alex North, and Best Picture. SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1960) 13606

full.suddenlylastsummer-3sh-13606

This is an original Columbia Pictures Three Sheet Poster (41×81) for the Joseph L. Mankiewicz dramatic classic, SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959) starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift. Based on a play by the very successful Broadway icon Tennessee Williams, the screenplay was skillfully adapted by Gore Vidal. Set in New Orleans in 1937, Hepburn plays a lady of means who is mourning the loss of her son. She wants to donate a million dollars to the hospital where Clift is a doctor if he will perform a lobotomy on her niece Taylor. The young woman seems to be totally traumatized by what she witnessed last summer. Tennessee Williams never forgave his own mother for letting his sister Rose have a lobotomy to “cure” her anxiety problems. The whole story turns on the character of the son Sebastian, but you never see his face or hear his voice in Taylor’s flashbacks. He is supposed to have died of a heart attack, but the audience finally discovers that it was a horribly cruel case of gay bashing. Both Taylor and Hepburn were nominated for Oscars. It was the eighth nomination for Hepburn and the third nomination for Taylor. This original three sheet poster is in very fine plus condition. This copy was never used and is about as good as it gets in terms of condition.

MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962) 1130

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Polish Poster (27×41) for the Lewis Milestone/Carroll Reed historical drama, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962) starring Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, Richard Harris, Hugh Griffith, Chips Rafferty, Gordon Jackson, Frank Silvera and Tarita. This was the second remake of the classic Nordoff/Hall tale of the infamous mutiny by Officer Fletcher Christian and his followers against the egomaniacal and cruel Captain Bligh. The film was not a commercial success, due, in great part, to Brando’s choice of playing Christian as an effeminate fop — hardly the expectation of audiences after Clark Gable’s sturdy, masculine performance in the Oscar winner from 1935. Poster design features a contemporary pop art image of the ship aflame in turquoise Pacific waters. Very Fine Plus.
