BEST DEFENSE (1984) 3160

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Willard Huyck war comedy, BEST DEFENSE (1984) starring Dudley Moore, Eddie Murphy, and Kate Capshaw. Moore plays a competence-challenged tank designer, and Murphy plays the tank commander who must later take Moore’s tank into combat. Murphy’s character was only added to the film after the original version was completed but then was panned by test audiences. The film is yet another in a long line of films that portrays the American defense system as being run by an army of Chaplin-like buffoons. Neither comic star was impressed with the way the film turned out; indeed, Murphy admitted later on the David Letterman show, “A few years back I made a film called BEST DEFENSE. And it was bad. REAL bad!” This original one sheet poster is folded and in near mint condition.

TOP GUN (1986) 19527

full.topgun-1sh-19527

Original Paramount Pictures One Sheet Poster (27×41) for the Tony Scott action romance, TOP GUN (1986) starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards. If RISKY BUSINESS (1983) luanched Tom Cruise’s career as a movie star, TOP GUN cemented his place. His character in this film, Maverick, is every bit as appealing as the teenage Joel in the earlier film. Guys wanted to be like him, and girls just wanted him. And yes, it’s cheesy and corny with a plot that is pure formula, but the action sequences are executed with consummate professionalism. Some might complain that the film is just a two-hour recruiting ad for the Navy, but few movies—before or since—have presented air combat in a more convincing and dramatic fashion. This original one sheet poster is rolled and in fine plus condition.

This film is the story of a group of leathernecks on leave in occupied Japan just before the outbreak of Korean War. Most of the movie’s fun is watching the marines get into trouble; however, some have complained that the “comedy” is slapstick and juvenile. And then the film takes a sudden serious turn towards the end. This original one sheet poster is folded and in very fine condition, with no fold separations but small pinholes in the corner.

Original 20th Century Fox Window Card (14×22) for the Raoul Walsh musical comedy, A PRIVATE’S AFFAIR (1959)—starring Sal Mineo, Christine Carere, Barry Coe, and Barbara Eden. Although classified as a musical, the film only has ONE song, “It’s the Same Old Army,” repeated over and over again. Mineo plays an Army private who is a talented jazz drummer but who also has some “personal” problems. While unloading sacks of potatoes one morning, Mineo and his buddies improvise “the” song. When the base commander finds out about it, he thinks they should go on national television. This original window card is in fine plus condition, with only some minor tape stains in the border area. As with most theater used cards, this one has the theater and playdate printed on it. This window card was used at the PAT Theater in the Four Corners Area of Lafayette, Louisiana.
